Sound. It is very important after 28 years of police "radio ear" listening to officers’ tone of voice and "phone ear" listening to callers in distress, how things sound is impactful. Any click, pop, screams, and whispers make my ears perk up or jump. With traumatic sounds in mind, we wanted to find quality sound.
I headed to Guitar Center where I lucked out finding a super friendly and helpful musician. He knew all about microphones. He had me try out the Shure SM7B with a Cloud lifter connected to a Focusrite Scarlet 2i2. With some great video guides from Focusrite and YouTube videos we had the beginnings of a recording “studio.” When we needed to add more microphones, we tried the Zoom Podtrak P4. When I brought it home Gabe was shocked.
“This is $200? This thing full of plastic?” Gabe asked me in disbelief.
“Do you think it is not worth it?” I asked.
“Umm, maybe we can find something better,” Gabe offered.
I started my search on Google. I came across a video review on a PylePMX-648 for $200 also. After watching Expert Island video, I was sold. I ordered the mixing board online and took the Zoom PodTrak to the Guitar Center. With some cables and a headphone amplifier for 4 outputs we were able to make it work. We just needed the software to create our podcast. Gabe was familiar with Adobe, so Audition was easy for him to short cut his way through editing.
We had a blast recording. We are still perfecting our sound. Hopefully, we get the sound right.
