"Emergence is basically a kind of expression of surprise in an observer. If you knew something was going to happen, you don't think it's emergent. If you were smart enough to predict that in advance from knowing the rules about the parts, then to you it's not emergent.
To somebody else who couldn't predict it, it's absolutely emergent. So I don't think these are binary categories. I don't think there's an objective truth as to whether something is emergent or not. Everything is from the point of view of some observer."
