Actress, Comedian, and TV host Whoopi Goldberg is the first Black person to win the coveted EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar & Tony) Award.
Within Goldberg’s amazing career she has received two Academy Award nominations, for her contributions in The Color Purple and Ghost, winning for Ghost. Goldberg was also recognized as the first African American to have received Academy Award nominations for both Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress.
Following the academy award, Goldberg won two Golden Globe for Best Actress (1986) for her contribution in The Color Purple, and Best Supporting Actress in 1991 for Ghost (Ghost also won a BAFTA Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role).
Goldberg starring in “Whoopi Goldberg: Direct from Broadway” won a Grammy Award for Best Comedy Recording in 1985. Not only did Whoppi Goldberg win the Grammy but she became only the second solo woman performer at the time to receive the award and the first African-American woman. Only three women performers have ever received the Best Comedy Recording award.
In 1990, Goldberg received a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her role as “Oda Mae Brown” in the hit movie Ghost. In 2002 Whoopi Goldberg won the Tony Award for her contribution as a producer for Thoroughly Modern Millie. Goldberg outdid herself where she was rewarded with eight Daytime Emmy nominations and went home with two. The acting veteran received nine a total of Primetime Emmy nominations. Concluding Goldberg’s long list of awards was her Daytime Emmy Award in 2009, for Outstanding Talk Show Host for her role on The View.

In 1992 Goldberg start in the comedy sister act earning a third golden global war nomination. She'd be prized to roll in sister back to back in the habit in 1993, making her the highest paid actress at that time, a theater performer producer, Goldboro, Casper performed and Broadway productions. One of which was a one-woman show that produced a comedy album that earned her a Grammy.
She has starred in the revivals of Stephen Saddam's music comedy. She was born in Manhattan and she's the daughter of Robert James Johnson Jr. Who was born March 4th, 1930 [00:06:00] and passed away March 25th, 1993. And he was a Baptist clergyman and Emma Johnson.
Harris September 21st, 1931. And she passed away on August 29th, 2010, a nurse and teacher. She was raised in the Chelsea Elliot houses. Goldberg has described her mother as a stern, strong and wise woman who raised her as a single mother with her brother Clyde from 1949. And unfortunate passed away in may 11 to 25th.
She attended a local Catholic school St. Columbus when she was younger, who more recent forebears migrated north from Fayetteville, Georgia polite go, Florida and Virginia. She dropped out of Washington Irving high school. She has stated that her stage four name will be, was taken from a whoopee cushion.
And she said, when you're performing on stage, you never really have time to go into the bathroom and close the door. So if you get a little gassy, you've got to [00:07:00] let it. So people used to say to me, you're like a whoopee cushion and that's where the name came. Regarding her stage surname. She said in 2011, my mother did not name me whoopee, but Goldberg is, my name is part of my family, part of my heritage, just like being black.
And I just know I am Jewish. I practice nothing. I don't go to temple, but I do remember the holidays. She has stated that people would say, come on, are you Jewish? And I always say, would you ask me that if I was white, I bet. One account we calls or her mother Emma Johnson thought that the family's original surname was not Jewish enough for her daughter to become a star researcher.
Henry Louis Gates Jr. Found that all Goldberg's traceable ancestors were African-Americans that she has no known German or Jewish ancestry and that none of her ancestors were named. Goldberg also worked in a number of theater productions and in 1978, she witnessed a mid air collision of two planes in San Diego, causing her to develop the fear of flying and post-traumatic stress disorder. All right. So from there, it goes all the way into all of her career, which we'll leave that for you guys to read.
We would be here pretty much all night. So some of the other things that will be Goldberg is into, if you don't know, she is a philanthropist and she's also an activist in 2006 Goldberg appeared during the 20th anniversary of. Goldberg is an advocate for human rights, moderating a panel at the Alliance of youth movements summit on how social networks can be used to fight violent extremism in 2008, and also moderating a panel at the UN on human rights, children and armed conflict, terrorism, human rights and reconciliation in [00:10:00] 2000.
And. On April 1st, 2010 Goldberg joined Cindy lopper and the launch of her give a damn campaign to bring a wider awareness of discrimination of the LGBTQ community and to invite straight people to ally with the gay lesbian, bisexual, transgender community, her high profile support for LGBT rights and aids activism.
They turned the 1987 March on Washington in which she participates. On an episode of the view that aired on May 9th, 2012 Goldberg stated she is a member of the national rifle association. And in May, 2017, she spoke in support of transgender rights at the 28th glad media awards. Goldberg is on the board of selectors of Jefferson award for public service.
She also serves on the national council advisory board at the national museum of American illustrator. And she was a speaker at the 2017 women's March in New York city and was such again at the following year's event on January [00:11:00] 24, 221 Goldberg appear with Tom Everett, Scott as guests on the American grabbed buddy's marathon fundraising episode of the George Lucas talk show, where she spoke of her time, working on snow buddies and raise money for the ASP CA.
All right. And just, uh, her awards. I know some of these are probably repeat it, but she does have more awards than those solo, all the wards and all the things that she's done, she's acted in over 150 films. She is one of the few people to achieve the got, having won the four major American awards, professional entertainers, and she is the only black woman to have achieved.
All four awards will be, has received two academy award nominations for the color purple and gold spooning. So in addition to all of the Grammy Oscars, Tonys, Emmys, that she's one that we went over. She has also the recipient of the 1985 drama desk [00:12:00] award for outstanding one person. For a solo performers on Broadway, she has won three peoples torso awards.
She has been nominated for five American comedy awards with two wins, which is the funniest supporting actors in 1991 for ghosts and funniest actors in 19 93, 4 sister act in 2001, she became the first African-American female to receive the mark Twain prize for American. In 1990 Goldberg was officially named honorary member of the Harlem globe Trotters exhibition basketball team by the members in 1999.
She received the gay and lesbian Alliance against defamation Vanguard award for continued work and supporting the gay and lesbian community, as well as the women and film crystal award for all standing women who through their endurance and the excellence of their work have helped to expand the role of women within the entertainment.
And July, 2010, the ride or fame honor Goldberg with a double Decker tour bus in New [00:13:00] York city for her life's achievements. And in 2017, Goldberg was named a Disney legend for a contributions to the Walt Disney. Company. So that's just a little bit about fat. I love bringing these things out because I've always been wanting to say that all of us can work together, but without some of the contributions of African Americans, entertainment would not be where it is right now.
And as you just heard Whoopi Goldberg being the first African-American. To win the Igor. And I know some of those movies is all favors goals, color purple sister act. I love all of those without will be Goldberg. And those movies, the movies wouldn't have been with a word and therefore she does deserve to win for all of her hard work.
