What's going on everybody and welcome to a another a day with crime black history fact edition. Of course I am your man, David, let's get into it. Today. We are going to talk about the first and at this point, the only, black person to ever hold the office of the president of the United States. Barack Obama.
Before I begin let me say that facts about him are very long. I'm gonna try to cut [00:01:00] down as much as I can. But I want to give you guys the gist of all the importance, that is Barack Obama.
Barack Hussein Obama the second. Was born August 4th, 1961. He is an American politician, lawyer and author who served as the 44th president of the United States, from 2009 to 2017. He is a member of the democratic party. Obama was the first African American president of the United States. He previously served as a US Senator from Illinois from 2005 to 2008.
And as an Illinois state Senator from 1997 to 2004.
So a little bit about him and his background. He was born in Honolulu, Hawaii. After graduating from [00:02:00] Columbia University in 1983, he worked as a community organizer in Chicago. In 1988. He enrolled in Harvard law school where he was the first black president of the Harvard law review.
After graduating, he became a civil rights attorney and an academic. Teaching constitutional law at the university of Chicago law school, from 1992 to 2004. Turning to elective politics. He represented the 13th district in the Illinois Senate from 1997, until 2004, when he ran for the us Senate.
Barack received national attention in 2004 with his March Senate primary win. His well-received July democratic national convention keynote address, and his landslide November election to the Senate.
In 2008, a year after beginning his campaign, and after a close primary campaign [00:03:00] against Hillary Clinton. He was nominated by the democratic party for president. Barack was elected over Republican nominee, John McCain in the general election. and was inaugurated alongside his running mate, Joe Biden,
on January 20th, 2009. Nine months later, he was named the 2009 Nobel peace prize Laureate, a decision that drew a mixture of praise and criticism.
Barack signed many landmark bills into law doing his first two years in office. The main reforms include the affordable care act, also known as Obamacare. Although without a public health insurance option. Dodd–Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act, and the don't ask don't tell repeal act of 2010.
The American recovery and reinvestment act and tax relief, unemployment insurance, reauthorization and job creation act served as economic stimuli [00:04:00] amidst the great recession. After lengthy debate over the national debt limit, he signed the budget control and the American taxpayer relief acts. In foreign policy, he increased US troop levels in Afghanistan. He reduced nuclear weapons with the United States Russia new start treaty, and he ended military involvement in the Iraq war.
In 2011, Barack Obama ordered the drone strike killing of Anwar al-Awlaki. A us citizen and suspected all Qaeda operative leading to controversy.
He ordered military involvement in Libya for the implementation of the UN secretary council resolution 1973. Contributing to the overthrow of Momar Khadafi. he also ordered the military operation that resulted in the death, of Osama bin Ladin.
After winning reelection by defeating Republican opponent. Mitt Romney, Barack was sworn [00:05:00] in for a second term on January 20th, 2013. During his term he promoted inclusion for LGBT Americans.
His administration, filed briefs that urged Supreme court to strike down same sex marriage bans as unconstitutional, which was the cases of United States versus wind soar. And Obergefell
He advocated for gun control and response to the Sandy hook elementary school shooting. Indicating support for a ban on assault weapons, and issue wide ranging executive actions concerning global warming and immigration.
In foreign policy, he ordered military interventions in Iraq and Syria. In response to gains made by ISIL after the 2011 withdraw from Iraq. Promoted discussions that led to the 2015 Paris agreement, on global climate change. Oversaw ultimately apologize for the Kunduz hospital airstrike. Continue the process of ending US [00:06:00] combat operations in Afghanistan in 2016.
Initiated sanctions against Russia following the invasion in Ukraine, and again, after interference in the 2016 us elections. I brokered the joint comprehensive plan of action. Nuclear deal with Iran and normalized us relations with Cuba.
Barack Obama nominated three justices to the Supreme court. Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan. We're confirmed as justices while Merrick Garland was denied hearings, or a vote for the Republican majority Senate. Obama left office on January 20th, 2017. And continues to reside in Washington, DC. During Barack Obama's terms as president.
The United States reputation abroad as well as the American economy, significantly improved. Obama's presidency has generally been regarded favorably in evaluations [00:07:00] of his presidency. Among historians, political scientists, and the general public frequently placed him among the upper tier of American presidents.
Since leaving office, Barack Obama has remained active in democratic politics including campaigning for candidates in the 2018 midterm elections, appearing at the 2020 democratic national convention and campaigning for Biden doing the 2020 presidential election. Outside of politics, Barack Obama has published three best-selling books dreams from my father in 1995.
The audacity of hope in 2006 and a promised land in 2020.
All right so before I give you my thoughts and get a bottle here about, Barack just a couple more tidbits about him as a lot of people may or may not know I'll fill these in. He is the only president that [00:08:00] was born outside of the continuous 48 states. He was born to an American mother and his father was Kenyan.
His mother's name is Ann Durham. She passed in 1995, born 1942. She was born in Wichita, Kansas. She was mostly of English descent, and yes, she was a white woman.
So that's just a couple things so let's close this out. Love Barack Obama or hate him. In my opinion, he did a lot of good and not to become too political. I think he did make his mark not only as a great president. But as a great representation of the first African American president. That we have had.
In my opinion, including now. I don't think the country has been ran the same since he left. A lot of people seem not to like him. But from all the accolades, I just told you he did a lot of [00:09:00] good, no matter how you feel about Obamacare, he told you at the beginning that he didn't know how well it was going to be, that it was going to need to be tweaked. He even made the statement that it was going to take more than him.
to make America back to what it was again, including Obamacare. He was just trying to help those who needed to be helped.
He nominated Sonia Maria Sotomayor as a Supreme court justice. She was the first Hispanic woman to become a Supreme court justice. As an African-American, I'll say this in closing. Everybody thinks that we voted for him because he was black. And to be honest with you, I did not.
I voted for him because I felt like that he was a man of his word and also voted for him because I felt like that he, was going to do what he said he was going to do. Now do I believe that he didn't make any mistakes? Absolutely not. He'll tell you. He did. There are some things that he did and I didn't agree with.
But I will say that I believe that he [00:10:00] ran one of the cleanest presidencies, that I've ever seen. It was time where you didn't really, wonder what was going on with the world and you didn't have to worry about if he was leaving with someone next door. And he always seemed to always just wanted to be America's president for all people.
Having a black president is something that I never thought that I would see in my lifetime. Martin Luther King in his speech I have a dream. If you listen, he kind of told you that he knew that we would get there one day. Even though he may not be there with us. I didn't think I'd be here with y'all when we did get one.
But it happened. And I think that if we were to let it, it would have happened for the better. I thought that it would make race relations between everyone a lot better, and in some cases the did, in some cases it did not.
It doesn't matter what color is skin you are, what matters is if you can hold the office. Do the office justice and at the end [00:11:00] of all of that, make sure that America and the American people,
was better off than when you started. I do feel like Barack Obama did that.
And also feel that a lot, of the bills that he passed, did help us out in the time that he was there. A lot of them was undone. Unfortunately, his successor was more than hell bent on trying to undo everything that he did. And I think in a lot of cases, we do suffer for that.
But Barack Obama, the first African American president. I think did us well. And I am proud that I was able to be alive, to see it happen. Now I hope that I'm alive whenever the time comes and I see the first woman president. We have the first woman vice president, who's also [00:12:00] African-American. But many feel that a woman can not lead this country.
As a father of three daughters and having a wife, I will tell you, I do not agree with that, and I think that women can do whatever man can do. And in some cases, Maybe even better.
