Back in January of 2019 I received a Happy New Year Text and a lead on a great story for 2019/2020 from Heather King, “I just put a group together called Black Ice Project. We are 40 black folks headed to Antartica to run marathon in January 2020.”
The average annual temperature in Antartica ranges from about −10°C on the Antarctic coast to −60°C at the highest parts of the interior. Near the coast the temperature can exceed +10°C at times in the summer and fall to below −40°C in the winter.
Heather and her group of adventurers choose Steve Hibb’s Marathon Adventures to help them turn their dream of running a marathon on every continent a reality. The #blackiceeproject brought 27 African-American runners to Antarctica to run a marathon. And they all finished their races making the group the largest group of African-Americans to complete marathons and Half-marathons in Antarctica in history.
On today’s episode we go behind with T Culpepper Glaze our correspondent, who was on the scene in Antartica. T interviewed several of members of the BIP for this episode, we were curious to know what would compel an individual to run a marathon under those conditions, how they prepared for the event and what lessons they learned along the way.
Then we followed up with an interview Heather King once she thawed out from the trip.
