On June 3, I received a link to a movie, "About The People", it was from Angie a friend, from a former life. In the movie were some familiar faces, I don't like to name drop, if you haven't already checked out the movie need to stop playing and go watch "About The People." While scrolling through my stories on IG Stories, I came across a post from Kovon, it was a flyer asking all crews to come out for a run and the same person who was in the movie was putting out the call-he was a runner. I couldn't make it, but I was curious to see how things turned so I stopped by his page and realized the event was a huge success.
How could someone organize a group run like this on such short notice? Was there a story here? Yeah there's definitely a story here, but could I get "That Coffey Boy" to share his story on the podcast? There's only one way to find out if he'd be willing to do the podcast and that was to invite him on the show.
"That Coffey Boy" has been a fixture in the NYC Running community for a minute. He is a Husband, Father, Filmmaker, Actor, Nike Pacer/Coach and founder of Define New York Run Club. What fascinated me was hearing Coffey's story. Hundreds of people just don't show up during the middle of a pandemic to head out for a run, unless they believe in the leader and the vision. When I reached out to Coffey, he was immediately receptive to the idea, he didn't come across aloof. When we sat down there was a sense of urgency to make a difference in the world and he's on his way to fulfilling that mission for the sake of his children. Coffey's son inspired him to write About The People. After joining a protest outside his home in Brooklyn that quickly turned, the following day he went for a run to decompress-he ran a marathon and movement was born.
