During the catastrophe of genocide, many Jews fought tooth and nail for their survival, as did the author of this book, Thomas Buergenthal. He was one of those fortunate enough to have survived multiple close brushes with death. As an innocent boy at the time of the Holocaust, he was like a tiny raft trapped in a storm – yet, he miraculously managed to survive through a mixture of resilience and good fortune. This book A Lucky Child is a testament to Buergenthal’s unwavering determination in the face of hardship and his tremendous luck in escaping death, but more importantly, it captures his valuable reflections about war and humanity.

Thomas Buergenthal is a Jew and a renowned judge of the International Court of Justice. After graduating from Bethany College in West Virginia, he proceeded to attend Harvard Law School where he completed his Master’s and Doctoral degrees, before going on to teach at various institutions such as the University of Texas, the American University Washington College of Law, Emory University School of Law and the George Washington University Law School. He also served as a judge in the International Court of Justice at the Hague, on top of holding various positions in multiple international organizations such as the United Nations and the International Olympic Committee.
