Bright Earth introduces Western art history from the perspective of chemistry, explaining the process of inventing and improving colors of various periods, regions and types. It shows us the charming attributes of color’s material properties. And, it provides a unique perspective on Western art history. Throughout this process, science, art and culture interacted with each other and cooperated in their evolution. The demand from art stimulated the development of chemical technology. At the same time, science expanded both the color spectrum of paintings and social life itself.

Majoring in Chemistry, Philip Ball graduated from Oxford University. He then obtained a PhD in Physics from the University of Bristol. He is currently a consultant editor for the science journal Nature. As a scientist and a writer of popular science, Ball won the British Aventis Prize for Science Books for his book Critical Mass: How One Thing Leads To Another. His work covers many fields including science, art, history, and society. His books are considered to be both entertaining and fascinating to read.
