In modern society, everyone is eager to attain freedom and self-fulfillment. People claim to be willing to give up anything for freedom. However, this book presents a different picture. In reality, lots of people, even the majority who seem to pursue and praise freedom, are unknowingly trying to escape from it. Their actions actually run counter to what they claim. The author probed into this phenomenon to explain the emergence of freedom, as well as why and how people escape from it. His aim was to show us a path to real freedom.
Erich Fromm was a German-American born into a Jewish family. As a psychologist, philosopher, and a member of the Frankfurt School, he moved to the United States in nineteen thirty-four to evade the Nazi regime. Fromm was deeply influenced by Marxist philosophy. His research covered a wide range of topics, including freedom, spontaneous love, totalitarianism, and democracy. He merged humanism and psychoanalysis to form his own style and is regarded as one of the founders of psychoanalytic sociology.
