As the founder of Psychoanalysis, Freud tremendously boosted the development of psychology and provided important theoretical support for Western humanities in the 20th century. He was followed by a great many and opposed by many others. But how on earth did an important figure like Freud spend his life? The author of this book read through almost all the literature on Freud, and as a result reproduced his whole life and academic journey. We will not only get to know Freud as a person, but also get a glimpse of the true essence of psychoanalysis.

Peter Gay, a German Jew born in Berlin in 1923, spent his youth in Nazi Germany before fleeing with his family to the United States. He died in 2015 at the age of 91. Gay received his Ph.D. at Columbia University and taught at Yale. He wrote over 25 books, such as The Enlightenment: An Interpretation and Weimar Culture: The Outsider as Insider. Many of his books won the National Book Award, and he also received the American Historical Association's (AHA) Award for Scholarly Distinction in 2004.
