Usually, the gut isn't well-liked, but the author points out that it is a super organ often neglected due to its “geographical location.” It is both proud and temperamental; it can both sustain and take lives; it can boost the brain's capacity and productivity but also make people manic-depressive. It is no exaggeration to say that a slight movement in the gut may affect the whole body. The book we’ll discuss today was the best-selling book in Germany in 2014 and was named the New York Times bestseller of 2015.
The author, Giulia Enders, works at the Institute for Microbiology in Frankfurt as a doctor of medicine. She was born by cesarean section and suffered from lactose intolerance as a child. By age 17, she had skin sores all over her body without a definitive diagnosis. Through self-medication, her personal experience shows that many illnesses stem from intestinal problems. With this book, she wants to remind us of the following fact: Only by understanding the way the gut works, feeling its temper, loving and caring for the organ can we prevent disease and maintain our health.
