This book is the literary version of the Harvard Happiness course. Upon hearing this, have you become a little confused? As happiness is a personal experience, how could it be the subject of a course, and how is it defined? Besides, is there really a method to achieve happiness? Moreover, is the method introduced in this book applicable to everyone?
Before we officially get started, let’s take a moment to consider the following question. Have you ever had the experience of achieving a very important goal but didn’t feel the emotion of joy you anticipated from it? There was a 16-year-old teenage boy who had such a similar experience. This very boy had trained hard in squash for five years, and won the championship in a national competition. After the initial celebration was over, he was astonished to find that the feeling of accomplishment and joy which he expected to last for a long time were suddenly all gone. He became filled with loss and emptiness. The tears of joy from just a few hours ago turned into emptiness and confusion at night. He realized that even a world championship could not guarantee long-lasting happiness.
Since then, the boy began to search for the essence of happiness. He read through every book he could find about happiness, from Aristotle to Confucius, and from ancient philosophy to modern psychology. While at university, he majored in psychology and philosophy. Later on, he became a tutor who taught Positive Psychology at school and shared his thoughts on happiness over the years. His Positive Psychology course was once selected as among the most popular courses at the university. Moreover, he was also regarded as the most popular tutor and life mentor in the school.
