Know My Name is an account of how the life of a girl named Chanel Miller was radically transformed after being sexually assaulted, including public opinion of her, her relationships with family and friends, as well as her self-perception, among others. Through recounting the author’s personal experiences, this book reveals how sexual assault can utterly destroy every aspect of someone’s life, while also presenting to us a victim’s journey from darkness to light.
Chanel Miller was a literature student at the University of California, Santa Barbara in the United States. In 2015, she was sexually assaulted by a student from Stanford University, and was subsequently denied justice due to an unfair judgement. Thereafter, she wrote about the court processes that she had gone through, which gained her widespread attention. Under the pressure of public opinion, the judge who oversaw her trial was removed, and laws pertaining to sexual assault in California were reformed. In 2019, she was one of those dubbed “100 Most Influential People of the Future” by Time magazine.
