Jung's status in the field of 20th-century psychology is founded on his theoretical research into the collective unconscious, the introvert and the extravert, complexes, and archetypes. Written in his later years Memories, Dreams, Reflections was Jung's autobiography and his final statement. In the book, he provides an insightful analysis of his life, describes his research interests and the origins of his key ideas.

Carl Jung was one of the leading pioneers of psychoanalysis, collaborating with Freud over a six years period in the development and dissemination of the theory of the unconscious. Later, due to differences in their approaches and beliefs, Jung formulated his own theory of analytical psychology and parted ways with Freud. Jung, a Swiss citizen, founded the C. G. Jung Institute in Zurich. He was also elected president of the International Psychoanalytic Society and became president of the International Society for Psychotherapy. He died in Switzerland on June 6, 1961. His theories and ideas have had a continuous and lasting impact on psychological research to this day.
