As one of the classic works of contemporary linguistics, this book marks the beginning of the study on cognitive linguistic metaphor systems. The book is both academic and popular. It shows that metaphor is both a vocabulary problem in language and an essential method of human thought processing that participates in not only human cognitive processes but also, more importantly, is the primary method of human living. Metaphor is based on our daily life experience. If we use metaphor effectively, we can, in turn, use metaphors to change our thoughts, thus improving our lives.

George Lakoff is a professor in the Department of Linguistics at the University of California, Berkeley. As the founder of cognitive linguistics, his research field involves cognitive linguistics, the neural theory of language, and conceptual systems. In addition to his plethora of published work, he also once served as a ‘language coach’ for Howard Dean, the former chairman of the Democratic Party of the United States, when he ran for president. The other author, Mark Johnsen, is a professor and the head of the Department of Philosophy at the University of Oregon. He is also one of the founders of cognitive linguistics and philosophy in the flesh.
