The first half of the book On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft is a memoir of the New York Times bestselling novelist Stephen King. It describes King’s early life, attempting “to show how one writer was formed”. The second half of the book shares King’s unique philosophy and writing techniques. It teaches aspiring authors how to write great novels and stories.

Stephen King is one of the most acclaimed and widely-read American novelists. He was the recipient of the 2003 National Book Foundation Medal for distinguished contribution to American Letters, and he also received the Grand Master Award from the Mystery Writers of America. The New York Times names him as “the master of modern horror.” In his career, King has authored about 200 short stories and more than 60 novels. His representative works include Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption, The Shining, Misery, etc. Among his works his fans consider The Dark Tower as his magnum opus.
