In a society with little social mobility, the belief that one can become successful through hard work appears to be a myth. This is the state America is in right now. Based on a long term follow-up study that consisted of interviews with 107 young adults and their parents across America, this book uncovers various social issues brought about by a lack of social mobility. This is reflected in aspects of family structure, parenting, schooling, and community. In this age of inequality, equality of opportunity is becoming increasingly rare. Evidence of the failed American dream is all around us.

This book was written by Robert D. Putnam, an American political scientist, and professor at Harvard University. He was awarded the Johan Skytte Prize in Political Science in 2006 and the National Humanities Medal by President Barack Obama in 2013. He has made extraordinary contributions in the fields of international relations and comparative politics. He is also the author of Making Democracy Work: Civic Traditions in Modern Italy and Bowling Alone: The Collapse and Revival of American Community. This book, Our Kids: The American Dream in Crisis, is his most recent work, published in 2015. It uncovers the hard truth of unequal opportunity in America, where class stratification is severe.
