The Second World War left Europe in chaos. Cities were razed to the ground, and tens of millions of people were massacred. The institutions we are accustomed to today banks, police departments, transportation systems, and national governments were either reduced to ruins or empty shells. The European continent was plunged into years of darkness marked by starvation, vengeance, ethnic cleansing, and civil war. The war was so extensive that a lot of people were still not convinced it was over even after the collapse of the Nazis.

Keith Lowe was born in 1970 and majored in English Literature at the University of Manchester . After twelve years as a history publisher, he embarked on a full-time career as a writer and historian, and is now recognized on both sides of the Atlantic as an authority on the Second World War. He is the author of critically acclaimed works of history such as Inferno: The Fiery Destruction of Hamburg, 1943, Savage Continent and The Fear and the Freedom.
