He was a research fellow at Oxford University and a fellow of London’s Royal College of Physicians, and the Royal College of Psychiatrists. He was the author of 12 best-selling books in psychoanalysis and he is regarded as the UK’s most literary psychiatrist. He specialized in the analysis of negative emotions. This book was the outcome of his research on solitude.
