“Design Sprint” is the tried-and-true method used by Google Ventures (GV) to help many startup companies target appropriate goals and gain market recognition. Agile and efficient, the technique requires a core team of up to seven people and must be accomplished in a five-day time frame. Instead of making a final product, the aim is to build a prototype and identify five target users to test it. This process allows the fledgling companies to gain an advanced understanding of the direction for their development. Since 2012, Design Sprint has successfully assisted hundreds of enterprises in finding their optimum place in the market.
Sprint is co-authored by three Google Venture design partners. Jake Knapp coined the name Design Sprint when he first used the process in fine-tuning the company’s internal workflow. Before joining GV and founding of the company’s design team, John Zeratsky was the chief designer at YouTube. And Braden Kowitz is GV’s current chief product designer. The trio has deployed Design Sprints with hundreds of startups. The process has become a mark for GV’s success.
