Today’s world is fast paced and everchanging. As we continue to modernize, there are more and more factors influencing our lives. The wealth of information and data can be overwhelming and our days are rarely linear due to the many complex non-sequential variables that spring up. This new way of life has supplanted traditional methods of planning and effected change on the world around us. From our homes, to businesses, to armies in the field, the "top-down" organizational structures that worked well in the 20th century have become ineffective. The authors of this book use their experience as American soldiers in Iraq during the gulf war, to introduce and test new organizational theories focused on building agile teams that can react organically in real time to the changes that pervade the modern world.

This book is authored by four militarily decorated individuals. The lead author is Stanley McChrystal, a four-star General of the U.S. Army, Commander of the U.S. forces in Afghanistan, the International Security Assistance Force, the former director of the Joint Staff, and commander of the Joint Special Operations Command. Two other authors are David Silverman and Chris Fussell, both of whom are former United States Navy SEAL Officers, and the fourth author is Tantum Collins, a Marshall Scholar at the University of Cambridge.
