Nonfiction writing is also called “narrative journalism.” With a history of less than 100 years, it emerged between the 1950s and 1960s and was heavily influenced by the development of the Pulitzer Prize. In 2001, the Nieman Foundation for Journalism at Harvard University established the “Nieman Program on Narrative Journalism.” They collected the scripts from 51 writers’ speeches to create the book Telling True Stories: A Nonfiction Writers’ Guide from the Nieman Foundation at Harvard University, which will introduce us to nonfiction writing.
Mark Kramer and Wendy Call were in charge of selecting and gathering the articles in this book. Mark Kramer is director and writer-in-residence of the Nieman Foundation at Harvard University. Wendy Call is a freelance writer and editor. Many of the authors of the articles in the book are well-known American nonfiction writers and winners of Pulitzer Prizes, Academy Awards, Emmy Awards, and American National Book Awards. Thanks to their efforts, the social significance and literary value of nonfiction writing has gained unprecedented recognition.
