Human nature is both self-serving and empathic. We conventionally overemphasize selfishness in human nature but neglect another aspect, our innate ability to feel empathy. People feel compelled to care for the weak and help others, continuously serving the progress of a unified human society. Empathy is the aspect of our nature that fosters group cohesion.
Frans de Waal is a renowned Dutch psychologist, zoologist, and ecologist. He is the Charles Howard Candler professor of Primate Behavior at Emory University. In 1993, he became a member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences. Subsequently, he was selected to be a member of the American National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. In 2007, TIME magazine named de Waal among the 100 most influential people in the world. His works include Chimpanzee Politics, Our Inner Ape, and many others.
