The author, Siddhartha Mukherjee, is an Indian-American physician and writer, a cancer specialist at Columbia University Medical Center, and an associate professor at Columbia University School of Medicine. He once had a patient with severe abdominal cancer, and at some point in treatment, the patient told the author: "Well, I’m willing to go on, but in order to go on I need to know what it is I’m battling." To answer this question, the author spent 6 years studying historical events, scientific literatures, patient interviews and various other materials. Before he knew it, he found himself writing a book.
