The Family Crucible: The Intense Experience of Family Therapy is a classic work in the field of family psychotherapy. It tells the story of how family therapists guided the Brice family out of their collective crisis. Using the Brice family crisis as a case study, the authors introduce the practice of family therapy and touch on many issues families face, including long-standing imbalances, triangular relationships, and the influence of the parents’ families of origin.

The book is coauthored by Dr. Augustus Y. Napier, Ph.D. in clinical psychology, and Dr. Carl A. Whitaker, M.D., a pioneer in the field of family therapy. Dr. Napier once served in the Psychiatry Department and in the Child and Family Studies Program at the University of Wisconsin and now directs The Family Workshop, a family therapy training institute in Atlanta. Dr. Whitaker was a professor of Psychiatry at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and authored academic papers featured in prestigious journals as well as several psychology textbooks.
