The Dawn Wall, an incredibly sheer and smooth face of El Capitan, a mountain peak located in Yosemite Valley, California, is known as the world’s most challenging wall to climb. It’s the wall Tommy Caldwell free-climbed, that is, climbed to the top using only his bare hands and feet. For nineteen whole days he lived right on it, overcoming all risks and challenges to finally reach the top. Caldwell has lived an eventful life: He was once taken hostage by rebels and felt compelled to commit murder; He went through an unsuccessful marriage; He even lost one finger. But his life story brings home the point that, as long as we are willing to challenge ourselves and embrace the unknown, there will always be beautiful surprises and rewards waiting for us beyond all the hardships and failures.

Tommy Caldwell is an extreme sport athlete, a legendary rock climber. He was one of the National Geographic Adventurers of the Year 2015 and winner of the Golden Ice Axes, known as the “Oscars” of mountaineering and climbing. He is also an honorary Sierra Club Life Member. Caldwell has earned his reputation as a climber by pioneering the ascent to some of the world’s most difficult climbing routes, not to mention the fact that he accomplished all this by climbing with only nine fingers. None of the difficulties he encountered ever crushed his spirit: On the contrary, they made him ever more determined to challenge himself.
