Speaking of pirates, what do you have in mind? Captain Jack from Pirates of the Caribbean? Or the hot-blooded anime character One Piece? These films and television works are often filled with romanticism, but real pirates in history lived by plundering and killing. A group of such barbarians, however, had once established a democratic republic, in which they voted for the captain, equally distributed the property, and even paid pensions to the disabled crew members. This practice was much more advanced than the systems of many countries at that time. How did the pirates build such a world?

Colin Woodard, the author of this book, is a graduate from the University of Chicago. He is a well-known best-selling author. His books include, among others, The Lobster Coast: Rebels, Rusticators, and the Struggle, and Ocean's End: Travels Through Endangered Seas. He is a longtime correspondent of The San Francisco Chronicle and The Christian Science Monitor. In the process of writing this book, the author had consulted a large number of data, visited the places where the pirates often showed up and, and went to the sites where pirate ships were salvaged. So he managed to collect a substantial amount of materials to write this book.
