The Righteous Mind explains the human interactions of history through the lens of moral psychology. The book focuses on the function of judgement and critique in religious and political enquiries, questioning the way ‘righteousness’ is perceived. The book claims righteousness can bind people together. However, the book also points out the blinding effect of the righteous, where every individual believes they are the sole incarnation of righteousness. The path of self-righteousness easily leads to criticism, disagreement, and even interference with any who hold different beliefs. The book argues, self-righteousness causes divisions and conflicts between people.

Jonathan Haidt is a leading American social and positive psychologist. He is a graduate of Yale and the University of Pennsylvania. He has delivered many TED talks, and in 2013 Prospect magazine named him one of the world's top 50 thinkers. Haidt is widely known for a theory he developed in another book, The Happiness Hypothesis. In this work, Haidt suggests that the emotional mind is like an elephant, while the rational mind resembles a rider on top of the elephant. Often, a rider cannot make an elephant go where they want. Instead, the riders serve their elephants, accepting responsibility for interpreting their elephant’s autonomous will.
