The Story of Art begins in prehistory and takes us on a journey through the ages, showing us the development or artistic expression over the course of human history. From North America’s totems to Egypt’s mummification rituals; from the rise of classical Greece to the darkness of the Middle Ages; from the true to life sculptures of the Renaissance to the sometimes incomprehensible metaphors of modern art; the author explains that art is not a linear history of developing techniques and taste, but a story of various traditions in constant flux.

E.H. Gombrich has been hailed as “the best known art historian in Britain, perhaps in the world” and “one of the most influential scholars and thinkers of the 20th century.” He was elected Slade Professor of Fine Arts at Oxford University and was a Professor of Art History at the University of London. He was talented at using concise language to convey serious topics, and continues to be loved by readers. His book, The Story of Art, is considered one of the most accessible works on the history of visual art.
