Known as the “longshoreman philosopher”, Eric Hoffer lost his parents in his early years and led a legendary life. He lost his eyesight when he was seven years old, regained it when he was fifteen. Hoffer worked as a longshoreman for many years and continued his work on the docks even after he became an adjunct professor at the University of California, Berkeley. His works were granted the American National Book Award several times, and he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by Ronald Reagan.
