The book argues that the end of the First World War did not result in peace, but instead inspired revolutions, violence, genocides, and aggravated regional military conflicts. The Bolsheviks took full advantage of the weakness of the countries after the war to instigate revolutions. As victorious states racked their brains to contain the defeated states and carve up the spoils of war, people in the defeated countries lived in abject misery. In this ideological soil of odious nationalism and revenge, radical ideas such as fascism and Nazism took root. This ultimately culminated in the flare up of the Second World War
Robert Gerwarth is a German author with a Ph.D. from Oxford University. He is a professor of modern history at University College Dublin, Ireland. Gerwarth has also worked at Harvard University, the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton University, and the Paris Institute of Political Studies. He has done extensive research on German history, and has penned The Bismarck Myth: Weimar Germany and the Legacy of the Iron Chancellor and Hitler's Hangman: The Life of Heydrich.
