For many people, the United States represents “freedom and opening up”. But when examining its roots, there is an obvious solid Christian foundation in the United States. So how did this country transition from “sexual abstinence” to “sexual liberation”? In the 20th century, the attitude toward sex for the people in the United States changed a lot. The “sexual liberation” undeniably also encountered a strong resistance from people who were opposed to obscenity and pornography. The author describes the rise of the sex industry and free-love culture along with relevant social changes in the United States.

The author Gay Talese is a well-known American writer. He is viewed as one of the fathers of “New Journalism”. Talese worked for the New York Times for 10 years and continuously wrote articles for The New Yorker and Esquire. His nonfiction works — The Kingdom and the Power and Fame and Obscurity — are both regarded as classics of their time. To inquire into the situation of sexual liberation in the United States, Talese independently visited massage parlors and free-love communes. It took 9 years to finish this book. In 2011, he was awarded The Norman Mailer Prize for Distinguished Journalism.
