IBM is the world’s largest information technology and business solutions company. The company was founded in 1911, and now it has operations in more than 160 countries and regions. In 2019, it ranked 12th among the top 100 global brands. However, this giant company once lost $16 billion, and the media said it had “one foot in the grave.” IBM’s turnaround is the result of many employee’s collaborative efforts, but the contribution of Louis V. Gerstner Jr. is not to be underestimated. He was the man in charge of IBM’s transition. This book tells of Gerstner’s experience at IBM in his own words.
The former president of IBM, Louis V. Gerstner Jr., graduated from Dartmouth College in 1963 with a degree in Engineering Science. He then spent two years at Harvard Business School before landing a job at McKinsey & Company. Twelve years later, he joined American Express and was employed there for another 11 years. In 1993, at nearly 50 years of age, Gerstner became the new head of IBM and put the recession-hit giant back on the fast track.
