It may surprise you to know that dinosaur fossils contain information about cancer, house cats can develop psychosomatic symptoms, wallabies will sneak into poppy fields in the middle of the night to “get high,” and parrots sometimes pluck their own feathers until they bleed… Animals and humans share the same illnesses, and many of our behaviors and pathologies find their roots in animals. This book will uncover many fascinating and surprising phenomena that take place across the animal kingdom and give you a new perspective on human illnesses.
Barbara Natterson-Horowitz is a professor of medicine in the Division of Cardiology at University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), as well as a cardiovascular consultant and a member of the Medical Advisory Board for the Los Angeles Zoo. Through her expertise in the homology of humans and animals, and her in-depth understanding of animal health, she provides a new perspective on improving and healing human illnesses both physical and mental.
Kathryn Bowers teaches a course on medical narrative at UCLA. She has written extensively about biology, evolution, health and medicine, and other related areas of research.
