MORE THAN A GATHERING OF THE YOUTH
|
World Youth Day (WYD) brings together young people from every corner of the globe to celebrate their Catholic faith. Away from home and buoyed by the witness of their peers, it becomes possible for many to have a transforming encounter with Jesus Christ. But it is not friends, travel or universal embrace of the human spirit that make WYD a life-changing, transcendent experience. Only Jesus Christ is capable of that. WYD is underway in Lisbon, Portugal. As we pray for this great gathering of youth from around the world, let us recall that this extraordinary event must have Christ as its center and focus.

Knights of Columbus
Tuesday, the first official day of the 141st Supreme Convention, ended with the annual States Dinner, a festive meal featuring patriotic songs from K of C jurisdictions around the world.
To cap the celebration, the Order presented the Gaudium et Spes Award, its highest honor, to Mother Agnes Mary Donovan, the first mother superior of the Sisters of Life. Mother Agnes recently retired after leading the order, founded by John Cardinal O’Connor in 1991, for three decades.
“Through all the community’s manifold works, and hours, days, weeks, months and years of prayer and contemplation before the Blessed Sacrament, Mother has led by example and guided them with wisdom,” the awards citation, delivered by Archbishop William Lori, read in part. “She offers everything to God for the good of others, and she has been one of the most significant leaders in the Catholic Church and the broader society for more than 30 years. She has been a highly esteemed collaborator of three supreme knights, and the entire Order of the Knights of Columbus has been blessed by her wise counsel and sustained by her prayers.”
After receiving the medal from Supreme Knight Patrick Kelly, Mother Agnes thanked the Order for its pro-life leadership and urged Knights of Columbus to show God's love vulnerable women and children.
“Ideally, charitable acts done for another should be preceded by first being moved in love. Otherwise, the other person is likely to get the impression that we love them only because we are good — or because we must since we are his or her parent, spouse or a Knight of Columbus — and not because of any goodness within them that is moving us,” Mother Agnes said. “Far from sentimentality, this love is the image of the love of God. … To love in this way is to grow in virtue. In the end, we can truly say, ‘It is I who have received the greater part in having loved and served you.’ What a privilege it is to encounter in another person the unique goodness and gifts given by God.”

Peter Ascik, who also serves as Pastor of St. Mary, Help of Christians and Christ the King Catholic Mission. During the candid conversation, Elizabeth simultaneously elicits the essence of the heart of Fr. Peter and his honorable call from a very young age to affirm all human life from fertilization to natural death. The interview beckons us to approach the pro-life movement through a compassionate lens, drawing the listener closer to the merciful heart of Jesus through his Holy Mother, and how to get engaged in advocacy to authentically live the Gospel of Life. Office of Family Life - Diocese of Charlotte With Natural Family Planning (NFP) Awareness week last week, perhaps you are wondering why the Church prohibits contraception and encourages NFP instead. It comes down to the dignity we have being made male and female in God's image and the call for a married couple to be a truthful sign of God's love in the marital act. The best preaching I've heard on the topic is from Fr. Patrick Schultz on his podcast Slaking Thirsts. Do yourself a favor and subscribe to the podcast!
