Bodegas are the lifelines of New York City. They are community spaces and grocery stores. They often serve as a primary food source, and they are accessible to all. It’s a fact that plant-based eating is healthier for you and the planet, yet access to healthy, sustainable, plant-based food is limited, if not impossible for many people. 

Nil Zacharias is doing something to change that. Nil saw bodegas as an opportunity to make plant-based eating easier and more accessible. The result, Plantega, a community-powered food system that not only creates greater access and exposure to plant-based foods, but also creates an additional revenue stream for the bodega owners. 

Nil is an entrepreneur, author of the Eat For The Planet books and host of the Eat for the Plant Podcast. He has spent the past 10 years focused on the intersection of food and sustainability and is passionate about bringing about change to our food system for the health of people and the planet. 

 

About Nil 

Nil is an entrepreneur, advisor, author, and podcaster who has spent the past 10 years focused on the intersection of food and sustainability. He hosts the Eat For the Planet Podcast and co-authored the Eat For the Planet books. Nil also heads Food Systems Innovation at EFFECT Partners, and is co-founder of Plantega, Spire, 8020Plants, and previously founded and ran the media platform One Green Planet. Prior to focusing on food systems change, Nil worked in the media and technology space for a decade and started his career as a lawyer in Bombay, India.
