There is no question that children’s learning has been significantly impacted by the pandemic. While all children have likely suffered, students from lower-income, English as second language families and students with learning differences have suffered the most.

Naomi Runkel and Kate Ristow are two passionate educators committed to minimizing the equity gap, the difference in academic outcomes between advantaged and disadvantaged groups. In 2020, Kate and Naomi co-founded The Space Idaho, a nonprofit organization dedicated to closing the equity gap and creating opportunities in education by providing access to high-quality academic support and college counseling for students grade 6-12.

This organization is close to my heart as I have been a board member for over a year and currently serve as the Co-Board President. As a parent who has spent many hours and dollars helping my own child achieve academic equity, I believe so strongly in the work of this organization and the passion that Kate and Naomi have for helping all students find success.

About Kate

Kate has over ten years of teaching experience at both the high school  (Sun Valley Community School) and college (The College of Southern Idaho, The University of Montana) levels.  Most recently she has worked as a private tutor and a freelance writer. Her local nonprofit experience includes positions at The Community Library and Swiftsure Ranch. Kate has a Master’s in writing and uses her skills in writing and storytelling to craft grant proposals.

About Naomi

Naomi began her teaching career in special education and has more than fifteen years of academic tutoring experience.  Her areas of expertise are math, science, and SAT and ACT test prep. She also has a range of experience creating curricula for groups and individuals and consulting with high schools to integrate test prep into their programs. Naomi’s passion is helping students build confidence in math by making it accessible and fun.
