Halfway There

Halfway There

Reflecting on my journey halfway through the UNC Charlotte DBA program, I realize how profoundly it has reshaped my professional outlook. The transformation is not just academic; it's a metamorphosis in how I perceive and approach the business world.

When I embarked on this journey, I anticipated academic rigor, but what I didn't foresee was the depth of real-world application. For me, I have been able to enhance the depth of research and more successfully blend theory with practice. My experience underscores how doctoral scholars in a DBA can effectively blend scholarship and practicality.

Take the case of Sam (name changed for the article), a DBA graduate from another university. His research in human resource management not only earned him accolades but also revolutionized his company’s HR practices. Such stories are common in DBA circles, showcasing how DBA programs present direct applicability to everyday business challenges.

The data shows that a significant number of DBA graduates experience career advancements, transitioning into higher managerial roles or consulting positions. Others who pursue a career in academia have had tenure-track and professor-of-practice confirmations.  This trajectory is not just a testament to an accredited DBA program's academic rigor but also to its real-world applicability.

DBA cohorts are melting pots of experience, bringing together professionals from diverse industries. In our cohort (Cohort 6 at UNC Charlotte), we're graced with the presence of top-tier executives, innovative entrepreneurs, and seasoned experts, each contributing a distinct flavor to our collective knowledge. These interactions not only enhance our discussions and often provide entertainment, but also cultivate a rich culture of collaboration and mutual learning. Beyond the academic growth, a remarkable aspect of this journey has been the emergence of genuine friendships. This blend of professional diversity, cultural richness, and personal connection truly sets the DBA experience apart.

The program’s format, featuring monthly residencies in Charlotte, is tailored for those with hectic professional lives like me.  I’ve found that this structure facilitates easier scheduling and planning. Furthermore, setting aside dedicated time to read daily has not only reignited my passion for learning but also reinforced an important lesson: small habits don’t just accumulate; they compound, leading to meaningful personal and professional growth.  Now, at the halfway mark, I feel more adept at time management, achieving a comfortable balance in handling the workload.

Have I achieved a work-life balance? Definitely not! But with the support of family and friends, I’m navigating towards a more harmonious integration of both. I now feel better prepared for the next phase of this amazing journey. I’m excited and ready to tackle next semester's course work and then my dissertation—the final stretch before graduation!

I recently stumbled onto Michael Kalika's 2023 report, "The Future of DBA Market Perceptions of Business Schools," which highlights three primary motivations for pursuing a DBA:

  • 81% for career transformation,
  • 76% for achieving the title of Doctor,
  • 71% for conducting impactful research.

These statistics echo the sentiments we’ve been hearing from our guest on DBA chronicles and among fellow DBA scholars.  Personally, I find myself among the 81% and 71% who are driven by the desire for career transformation and the pursuit of impactful research. Titles have never been my motivation. In fact, my journey into this program began at a time in my life when I was seeking a meaningful distraction.  I felt somewhat broken and was experiencing a dip in confidence. Choosing this path has proven to be incredibly transformative; not only have I regained my confidence, but I’m also better equipped to tackle life and business challenges more effectively.  Admittedly, I haven’t always grasped the rationale behind some of our assignments, but I have decided to trust the process. As I continue on this path, my aspiration is to conduct research that delivers real impact and to make significant contributions to my industry.
