šļø Welcome to Episode 12 of EdUp International, where YOUR time to #EdUp has arrived!
Iām your host James Shafer, joined by Shaun Carver, Executive Director at International House at UC Berkeley. Shaun has served in several leadership positions in international education, including stints in Beijing and Shanghai, and he is currently pursuing his doctorate in education (Ed.D.) at the University of Southern California.
In this episode:
šShaun shares the rich history of International House, starting with the very first one at Columbia University in New York City. He tells the story of its origins, conceived by Harry Edmonds around 1908 and established in 1924 with the support of John D. Rockefeller, Jr.
š He offers a captivating look at early 20th century society, with a glimpse at segregationist feelings of the time, recounting the protests in Berkeley against the promised diverse mix of residents when International House at UC Berkeley was set to open in 1930.
šShaun discusses how the diverse and communal settings of the three International Houses foster open and civil dialogue on complex global issues. He explores today's societal divisions and how the mission of International House, in creating an āopen-minded and intellectually challenging communityā, promotes empathy and understanding between different cultures or those with different viewpoints (as Ted Lasso would say, ābe curious, not judgementalā).
We conclude with SEVIS Education Insights, where Jesse Ruhl of SEVIS Education and Consulting takes a deep dive into Optional Practical Training, or OPT, employment eligibility.
