Listen to your voice and have others listen to your voice.
Pay attention to how you have normal everyday conversations.
e.g. your body language, your intonation and pronounciation.
Understand from the script what key words could be or are in play
Don't "not" read a script because you don't think you're right for the read.
Do "not"read a script because you are uncomfortable with the topic, or the message.
Don't compromise your integrity just to get a gig.

I had this gravelly tone to my voice that was heard by my coach as well as myself .
Turns out this was causing issues.
After being made aware of its existence I started working on getting rid of it as a default and use it as a feature.
Sometimes I wind up doing a couple of reads because I can hear it creeping in when I don't need/want it in the read.
Getting better at controlling this feature and have used it when it could lend its usefulness to the read. Such as a character who's supposed to be old, and grizzled.
