REVIEW STARTS AT 15:30......I'm not going to sit here and blow sunshine up your ass. Giannis died, so I got a guest host! Just kidding. He's still alive. Unfortunately. Unlike Goose. Who as Olivia explains in her theory, was murdered by Iceman. Maybe Iceman can come back and help us with that one. Join Sean and guest Olivia (from "Year of Pacino") as they talk about why Top Gun is one of the greatest films ever made. Together, they want some butts, and they get some butts. <a href="https://www.facebook.com/fkyouropinionpodcast">Facebook Page</a> , <a href="https://twitter.com/FkYourPodcast">Twitter Page</a> , <a href="https://www.instagram.com/fkyouropinionpodcast/">Instagram Page</a> ,<a href="https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCyB2_t1Ka0FVv7ldXvnOFrA?view_as=subscriber/">Youtube Page</a>, <a href="https://www.patreon.com/fkyouropinionpodcast">Patreon Page</a>

All those are linked in the description. Enjoy the episode. Okay, I'm recording now. Do I need to record? No, no, you don't need to do anything. I don't need to do anything. Okay. Yeah. Easy peasy. Why do you want to have a shirt on? on your head, we need to clarify, I want to have a shirt on your head. I have two shirts on. I have a shirt on my body and a shirt on my head because I took a shower. And I'm plopping and so plopping is where, if you have like, really long, curly hair like I do, using a towel, like will break the curl so I put my hair in a T shirt. Well, as a fun fact, Olivia This is weird. I've been Yeah, I don't like looking at your face. A couple weeks, but I haven't seen your face in years. So this is weird. This is crazy. You look good. Are you doing Oh, I don't like it. I've got a fucking t shirt on my head. Well, besides a T shirt on your head You're so it's so weird seeing you in person. Not I mean, not in person. But just like seeing your face cuz you get like, when I think of Sean Corbin I think of when we took our Top Gun picture together. You know, we both word Top Gun shirts. Yeah. I'm like I'm a whole new person. It's just like, Olivia, who are you? I don't know you anymore. I I've changed I feel like I've changed a lot you know since since you last seen me like I just do whatever I want. Now I'm like, I want pink hair. I want cats. I want piercings. I want to play video like I'm a gamer now. Like, you know from all my texts about the Witcher Yeah, that's like all I do is play my ps4 Nintendo Switch. I'm all about alpa Chino now Yeah, you're a whole new person. I barely knew alpa Chino before and now I feel like there's a whole new whole you're a whole new woman. A woman I've dedicated This is my second. This is a segue into promoting my own podcast the year of pitino. Oh, this probably is my 2020 New Year's resolution was to watch all of Al Pacino's filmography, which is like seven days long. And actually last night I watched Bobby Deerfield watch that movie is so fucking bad. I don't remember a lot of it. You You're not edit. You're not in between on any of these movies. You either are Oh my god, I love this film. Or this is the worst output you know film ever. And you have maybe five or six running as the worst output. Chino, have you ever also fucking bad? I will say Simone wasn't great, but it wasn't terrible. And they were doing some things that I thought was interesting. Like, that's like a good mid tier. I know. Here's the thing. I just want to be entertained. Okay. And it's like, if I'm entertained. It's a good movie. If I'm not entertained, then maybe it's not the best movie. Yeah, no. My toast Yani doesn't understand that whatsoever. I feel like Jani is very much stereotypical film, bro. Like who I always hated having in my classes where it's like, my favorite fucking movies, Pulp Fiction. And it's like, or it's like my favorite movies. Wayne's World and Top Gun and they're like, you're not really into movies, are you? I'm like, bitch, shut the fuck up. I've seen more movies than you have. Okay, okay. Anyway, we're not here to bash on Jani. As much as I love everything we talked about. It's probably gonna get cut. Anyway, you're trying to introduce me? Hi, I'm Olivia. I'm not Jani Jani and I are very different. I have a whole I have all intro here. I wrote. Okay, cool. Are we starting the episode now? Okay, is it weird doing a podcast with someone who also does their own podcast? No, because then you know, podcasting. You know what we're doing. You know what this game is? Where Yani openly admits he doesn't know anything about podcasts. He doesn't listen to podcasts. He doesn't understand all these things I'm trying to do. He's just shits in my face when I try and do something new or trying experiment. We're gonna stop shitting on Yani. That's basically all we've done today. I share that thought this that's this whole podcast. Hello folks. Welcome to fuck your opinion a movie review podcast. This is a bonus episode because my regular podcast co host Jani, you know that sack of shit. He's not here today. Instead joining us is my good friend Olivia. Olivia, you want to introduce yourself? Hi, my name is Olivia. Shawn and I have been friends for quite some time. Are we going to talk about how we became friends? Sean, are we gonna talk about that? Or? Oh, yeah. So we met a Dolomites screening a couple years back and went to an eye hop. Oh, wait, shit. Sorry. Wrong story. No, we were on film sets together and I had a lot of anxiety and I would throw up and Shawn would be there. Well, I grew up right towards that. Yeah. I still have anxiety, but I don't throw up from it anymore. Like I really work hard to not throw up anymore. When I started. The joke is basically every time you see a cute boy, Easter up, which is why you never threw up around me. Shut up, Shawn. But no, it was like dating. This gave me a lot of anxiety. And so I was thrown up a lot. I Oh god. I don't know if this person listens to your podcast, but I was at this dude's house one time and we were just like hanging out watching a movie and I just got so nervous. I like went to the bathroom and like threw up and he doesn't know that I threw up in his house. hope he's not listening. so awkward. isn't a good intro to who I am as a person. Here let's let's actually say Olivia. Let me let me go back. Let me go back. I had a whole thing ran. Okay, what was what did you write about? I'm gonna read word for word, because I haven't really sit here quietly. Yeah. Hello. Welcome to fuck your opinion, a movie review podcast. We're doing things a little bit differently today. Jani isn't with us. He's still alive, unfortunately. But he's just not in this episode because he doesn't deserve the film we're talking about instead. Joining us is my good friend Olivia. Host of a another movie review podcast Europe Chino. Olivia. How you doing today? Hi. Wow. Yeah, it feels like a news news reporter thing Hi, my name is Olivia. I'm out here in Austin Texas today and the weather. Wow is your best fun. Well, you just mock me because I read off with something Dan we've got coming in. I pre wrote that text because I wanted to get just right I needed to say all the words where I introduced Olivia I shot on Jani and all that you know all the essence of this pocket Yeah, you got the most important part about me which is that I've dedicated my life to alpa Chino Have you done like blood sacrifices towards alpa Chino? Not yet, but I did throw a birthday party for him alone in my apartment. So that's you know, well, I guess my other friends had a birthday party like we were Skyped we're doing it virtually right so me and some of my other friends. We had a birthday party for Al Pacino on his birthday April 25. He turned 80 this year alpa Chino I hope you're staying safe out there because if alpa Chino dies, I will not be okay, so you hear that alpa Chino don't die? Please don't die. Don't die live forever. I hope it Chino even though you're a good around 60 years older than Olivia. I hope you Outlast her. So she doesn't have to live in a world without you. I've said this to my friend Shelby before and she's like, Olivia Be quiet. And I was like, but honestly though, I don't want to live in a world where like alpecin is dead. So all right. So yeah, we've been friends for a while. Yeah. So Olivia, how did how did we meet? What what brought us together? So we went to film school together. And I think it's just you and I view films very similarly. Like we view them the same way like we want to be entertained, we want to be captivated whatever that means. And I feel like we had to battle our way through a lot of bullshit and film school where they're like, Oh, damn, is art. I launch. It gotta shut me insane. I mean, listeners. Yeah, sorry. But no, it's okay. I think that like the greatest movie ever made legitimately is Top Gun. Okay, great, because that's what we're talking about today. I want to segue though. I want you to talk I want to talk. Yeah. So like just going through film school where your favorite movie your top three favorite movies are the Avengers. Wayne's World and Top Gun. It was not easy because they like, they don't take me seriously because I'm a woman, first of all, and they definitely would take me seriously because I'm like, one of my favorite movies is Top Gun. And they're like, you probably just haven't seen a lot of movies have you? And I'm like, No, I can guarantee you I've seen more movies than you have. And the people who say that are the ones that top one top movies, Pulp Fiction, for sure. Always Pulp Fiction or, or Fight Club. It's always fucking Pulp Fiction or Fight Club. And you know what, I have Pulp Fiction on DVD, I refuse to watch it. Because for one of my birthdays, a friend gave me a copy of pulp fiction was like, it's my favorite movie. So I thought you'd like to watch it for your birthday. And I was like, No, I've only seen Pulp Fiction once. And it was on TNT. So they took out all the cursing and all all the essentially Tarantino content. And I just have never had the desire to watch it again, I'm sure I would like it more. But I'm also not a big Tarantino fan. So I'm just like, I don't see the point. Or they're gonna get a lot of hatred. So I'm in this group, where they just talk about their favorite movies to rewatch, and everything. And someone made a chart. It was three rows, all nine Tarantino movies, you had to pick one movie in each row to be erased forever. Which movies Would you be willing to depart from? And I just kind of set in the back of my head. Can I pick all of them? Can I arrange all of them? All of them? All of them? It says, Yeah, just I don't care. I don't care. Oh, Gong What? With what you were talking about? I acknowledge he's a good filmmaker. Technically. That being said, I feel like there's a lot there's a lack of heart in his films. And that really gets to me. I mean, I don't give a crap about the characters most of the time. I don't care what's happening. Sure the dialogue can be fine, but I don't know. I just, and that's that. Yeah, I mean, there are things I do like about his films. Don't get me wrong. It's just I would not put any of those movies on any favorite lists of mine. Well, and I will say that with Jackie Brown, I did care about Jackie Brown. I like Jackie Brown rock. Yeah. What I think we both really value in films and movies, is that entertainment value, what we really want to do is connect with the characters connect with the stories and have a good time. I mean, for the most part, I'm watching enjoyable, fun movies, I very rarely will pick something that's really sad and depressing. Not that I think if that kind of fell might be bad. For example, I don't necessarily seek out Italian neorealist films, I think they're good. But I would say you and I, so that's a little bit different from how I feel how I see it, because like, I'm not like seeking out movies that are going to make me feel good or movies that are thinking me funny. I just like to watch all kinds of movies and I just want to be captivated in a way whether that's like, if it's a comedy I want to lap if it's an action movie, I want to like be moved by the action. If it's like, one of the one of the greatest movies I've watched recently was Silence of the Lambs, which is like, definitely not a feel good movie. But it's still incredible. I was captivated the whole time. Yeah, no, I totally agree. I might have just said that wrong. Yeah, it's just like, I just want to watch something and I want to be kept like, I don't entertain is what I say. But if you like captivate is a better way to say that. Like, I just want to be like, I don't feel like I'm wasting my time. Exactly. Also, for me, it's a question of what is the film trying to do? What is it setting out to achieve? And does it achieve that in a way that works for me, right? So you know, like, there will often be films that might not be normally my cup of tea that I actually end up really liking or enjoying or thinking are great, like on the last actually two episodes ago that we recorded. I was telling Jani I liked an Italian neorealist film, and he was shocked just shocked that I liked something so sad and depressing. I'm like, Yeah, well, that film was setting out to achieve something that did it really well. Yeah. Yeah, like, what you you can like all different kinds of movies like exactly people are shocked. They hear that like, my favorite movies are talking Wayne's World in The Avengers, but they're shocked that like my fourth favorite movie is singing in the rain or my fifth favorite movie is Gladiator or my sixth favorite movie is centavo woman. That's the one for like I went out to go see Sonic the Hedgehog earlier this year. It wasn't good. audible loved it. By the way, listeners if you can listen to one episode of Olivia's podcast, Europa Chino, listen to the Scent of a Woman podcast episode because Olivia and Shelby All Star performances hit it head on. It honestly is one of my favorites. But when it came time to release it, there are some more important things going on. So we kind of went on a hiatus for like a few weeks. But anyways, enough of this. Let's actually talk about that we're supposed to talk about Oh my fucking god. I love Top Gun. Yeah, Top Gun movie watched his top gun. Now. Let me let me restart. Okay. But enough of all this jibber jabber on you know how much we fuckin hate Jani. I know you don't know him. But you can tell from the episodes. He's just a really annoying piece of shit. We can just ignore him for this episode. Okay. Instead, we're going to talk about one of the greatest films of all time, Top Gun, a film that is near and dear to both of our hearts. Yeah, I found that has carried us throughout the years and inspired us to be better people. Seriously though. Yeah. Very like, and it's also really poignant because yesterday was supposed to be the release date. The original release date of Top Gun Maverick. Yeah, it's crazy. It's crazy. And now we have to wait a couple months. We have to wait a few more months, but it's okay. I've waited my whole life for talk. I'm ever to come out. I can wait a few more months. At least it's there. It's in the Can you know, at least it's there. It's in the Can They got because it was supposed to come out in 2019. But they had to do some reshoots. That's what's come out and June 2020 and I had to wait for Coronavirus but it's okay. But no. So Top Gun just it's it's a perfect movie. Okay. It's everything that you could want. It's a 1986 movie. We've got Kenny Loggins, we've got an Academy Award for take my breath away. You've got fighter jets. You've got homoeroticism all over the place, not just the volleyball scene just everywhere. You've got possible Soviet planes attacking. It's great. Yeah. Normally throughout the episode, because Jani and I have conflicting opinions, what we'll do is talk about the story, then we'll talk about favorite and least favorite scenes, then we'll kind of break down craft and categories. I want to throw that all out the window, because I just want to talk about this movie I want to because again, this is something we both really love. But we just rewatch the movie together. And something that I find interesting, as I think part of it is because we haven't seen the movie together in a couple years, how we've kind of diverged in why we love the movie, while still loving it. Also, I need to say we're not going to summarize Top Gun if you haven't seen Top Gun, go fucking watch it. Get your ass out of here and go watch Top Gun. And if you don't like Top Gun, as the title of this podcast goes, fuck your opinion. It's a great movie. So Top Gun, Olivia. Tell me why do you love Top Gun? So I did not say why love. I did not say while I'm talking. I'm talking because it is all about a man accepting his bisexuality. And that's why I love talking. That's a very elaborate essay. He just gave us. Okay, listeners. So also and I will say not only that, I do love that. Our boy Tony Scott was like we're gonna take some cameras. We're gonna strap into some jets and we're gonna shoot missiles and blow up planes. Oh my god. I love how software this movie is. It knows what it is and what it wants to be. But I want to I want to I want to go back because it's kind of sighs skirted over this. Even though you tell me this story all the fucking time every time I have a phone call with you, Olivia. It's Hey, Shawn, did I tell you about the time that I went to the Alamo Drafthouse and gave this great impassioned speech about how Top Gun is a homoerotic. Okay. Please. So here's, here's the thing. So, Alamo Drafthouse has a series called queer film theory where you go up and you talk about there's like, usually a theme for the night. And I've done this for like several years now. And like I'm kind of a regular and I wanted to do Top Gun and the host Mike was like Olivia, we to talk in the first month. You can't do it again. But then after I did my first performances on Napoleon Dynamite and Star Trek Into Darkness, he's like, you can do Top Gun whenever you want, but I knew I had to save it for the perfect moment. February of this year, the theme was Supposed to be unrequited love and I was like perfect top. But then it switched it switched to queer murderers and I was like I can still make Top Gun work because because Top Gun has just flown under the radar because Iceman Iceman murdered goose. And it's like a queer love story, murder plot and Top Gun Maverick needs to be the revenge plot that we deserve rooster who is Miles Teller and gooses son needs to try to kill Iceman in Top Gun Maverick or like, you know, Iceman has gotten away with murder for 34 years and I'm finally exposing him Okay, I don't know what's gonna be a fair fight though. I mean, in the shape Val Kilmer is in right now. You know, who cares? So, yeah, okay, guys. Fuck Iseman, he murdered deuce. And I went up. I gave my speech like with a different clubs and everything and I had a standing ovation. And it's the greatest public speech I've ever given. And people are like, you're so fucking right Iceman murdered goose goose predicts his own death twice in this movie. When they're at the bar, and he's like, ice man's cold as ice and he says all this shit about ice man saying he's cool as ice. He'll wait for the other person to get impatient and mess up. And then he's got you and that's exactly what happens when goose dies in this movie. Iceman knows that Maverick is super impatient. So he waits. Remember at the beginning, he Maverick gets in the jet wash a little bit and then Iceman waits he could take the shot, but he doesn't take the shot. He waits and waits and waits until Maverick is right with the perfect distance. He flies away. So Maverick gets stuck in the jet wash and the goose dies as a result. Yeah. And do says I just want to make it to graduation after they get in trouble for like the whole buzz tower thing. You know, as soon as he says that he's not making it to graduation by goose. It's like Cougar his family. He just has to look at that photo and be like, oh, buddy, oh, buddy. Oh, buddy. You know, though it's funny rewatching it knowing that gives us gonna die. He goes at least two I might have missed the third one. But at two points, he suggests, you know, maybe I can be doing another job. In the beginning. He says, you know, maybe I should be a photographer. And later on he says, you know, maybe I should be a truck driver. A truck driver. Oh, goose. Yeah, it's like goose. Goose get out of there. Maybe you should have become the truck driver, then, you know, a little boy would have a father does then have a father goose. You know? Um, I just I love this movie. When we were I watched this movie at least once a year. So like Alamo Drafthouse will have like a Top Gun movie party that I've been to multiple times and like, I'll sing karaoke, like you've asked it like I you know, I like they have the words up there. But I have the the song memorize and so I can just walk down to the audience thing is my friend. Wait, what? What was your question? I my question is, you know, Meg Ryan's quote, where she says, Take me the better lose me forever. Hey, she's like, Hey, you, honey. Take me to better lose me forever. You're my way home, honey. Yeah. So I guess my question is, did she not take them to bed because she lost them forever. Food for thought, Shawn. That was terrible. So I'm, here are the notes I have from Top Gun oil. And before before we get into them, though, okay. Okay. One last thing I want to establish. Yeah. Heading into this. Yeah. Olivia, you have? We've already established that you have a special relationship with top gun? Yeah, but I know you have an extra special relationship with Top Gun and how it is preserved in cinematic history. Would you like to elaborate on? Yes. So I'm in college, I took a film class with an instructor who is part of the National Film Registry. And in that class, she asked each of us to write a paper about a movie that we think should be put in the National Film. I of course, wrote about Top Gun and I said this was this was 2014. I said Tom can it's been the National Film Registry. It's incredible what they do with the editing and the planes. There's just a national icon. The next fucking year Top Gun is put into the National Film Registry in the Library of Congress. And I was like, Oh my god, there's no there's no way that my professor did this for me. And I asked her about it. She's like, Oh, yeah, no, that was for you. And she said, It's funny how much you and Christopher Nolan have in common because he also kept fighting for top could have been in the National Registry. I was like, Oh my god, cuz he's also one of my he's one of my favorite directors too. And so I was like, Why? Why was CRISPR not obsessed the top gun? Well, a few years later Dunkirk comes out and like, because I've seen Top Gun so many fucking times. I have like all the scenes memorize almost all the flight sequences in Dunkirk are just copy pasted from Top Gun. They even do the like, oh break and hold just like I'm gonna break and we'll just fly right by they do that they like break hard, right? Like they just do all the Top Gun shit. And I'm like, I'm on to you, Chris. I love how going off of what we were talking about earlier where we got all these film school annoying, pretentious rd nerds. Yeah, where those folks will also glorify Christopher Nolan. But Christopher Nolan Halo five. Yeah, go against that he loves his top gun. He loves Michael Bay. I was just reading the other day how He loves macgruber. I mean, he's all over the place on his taste. But that's what that's part of what makes him such a great filmmaker. He actually likes these fun movies. Exactly. And I think he I bet he views films similarly to how you and I view it right? Like, there has to be some sort of entertainment factor. There has to be some sort of like, why are people going to sit here and continue to watch this movie? the proudest My father has ever been of me is when I told him that thing about Christopher Nolan, because that's also one of his favorite film directors. And I say that as a joke, and he's like, no, love you. That's not true. And I'm like, it's actually true, though, dad. Yeah. No, I'm proud of you. I'm proud to know you. I'm proud that I don't know if I had any contribution to this at all. But I want to feel like I semi did, because I'm a man. And I want to take semi credit for anything I can. Yeah, especially for work that women do. Yeah, exactly. But I just like to think that, you know, for some of those film bros in college, it's like, Did any of them have an influence in film history like that? I don't think so. I don't think so. I'm also a few years ago, they had a screening at Balboa that a token screening at Bob Bullock when they got like a new laser projector. And they had one of the pilots. There was either Wolf Man or Hollywood. And I went up to him afterwards. And I was like, we were talking. I was like, yeah, so got in the Library of Congress. He's like, Yeah, I heard about that. And I was like, I actually helped with that. He's like, Oh, my God, no way. And we talked about that for a little bit. So awesome. Freaking awesome. And I have a pic. I have a picture with him to somewhere. So yeah. Well, Olivia, let's actually talk. Oh, yeah. Just one last thing. Also, I just like I've dedicated this year of my life to help Chino, I've dedicated my entire life to talk. And since since and gotten to the Library of Congress, I was like, well, I just have to like actively start preserving more of it. So I now have two copies on VHS. Three DVDs or Blu ray. I just got the 4k that came out last month. And I have the soundtrack on vinyl, CD, digital and tape. Oh my god. And it's not just me. It's like my friends will go out and they'll see talk and stuff. And they'll buy it for me. Yeah. So that's nice. Great. Anyway, my friends don't buy me anything. You have friends? Wow. Thanks, Olivia. I'm just kidding. I text you every fucking day, Sean. Yes, it's a bit much. Anyway, so let's get into this. Let's actually talk about the masterpiece that is Top Gun. Olivia fucking What do you want to talk about? What do you want to say? start us off. So I've realized that there are a few movies where I can do this. We're all like see a scene and I will be able to tell you what exactly is going to happen in the scene after it. And that's Avengers endgame because I saw that shit 10 times in theaters, and topkin we're watching talking together because like for my podcast, we watched the movie together and then we record and so when Sean said that we're gonna watch it separately. I was like, fuck now we're watching this together like it's may 25 2016, which is the last time you and I watched it together. In theaters. By the way. We watched it in theaters. What? That was great was the best theater experiences in my life. I stopped talking in theaters three times that year. Because it was because we saw it and then it was at Alamo Drafthouse. And it was at Bob Bullock later that year to 2016. Great, great year for Top Gun and you know, what, if it was the 30th anniversary, if COVID somehow manages to become manageable, by the time Top Gun two comes out, and they have a Top Gun screening? I will 100% be there if it's a Yeah. So I'm like, you know, I'm at high risk and I'm sequestered alone in my apartment and I have been for months now. But I'm like, Top Gun might be one of the two routes one of the three reasons why I break quarantine. There are only two movies that I'm willing to break quarantine for to go see in theaters. Top Gun to and Bill and Ted face to music. I am so fuckin excited there are I also have two movies that I'd break quarantine for and that is Top Gun Maverick. I mean should be self explanatory. And then because I have to Avengers end game because I said I would watch endgame every month it's in theaters and that's for the rest of my life Okay, so here are my notes which again I've seen this movie so many times that like I don't need to remind myself that what happens in the movie but there are just some things I want to talk about that I started like what I hate about this movie Sure. Obviously there's so much to like about it. So stuff I hate about this movie one whenever slider takes a shot It's so fucking gross he does it like twice and it's the way he just like next it and we just see his whole neck and it's just I don't I don't like it I don't like anything. It looks really weird. It's almost as if some of the times there's nothing in the glass so he has to overdo it it's like the they're like slider says hey guess who's asked did you have to kiss to get here and guru says the list is long but distinguished and then flatter goes yeah like my Johnson and does the next shot thing sir ball slider as much as I love everything directed towards him. Because he's the punchline of so many jokes at the same time. You know, he was chosen for his physique not as act like ability. Oh, yeah, easily The Worst Actor The movie like they chose him for that one shot in the Bible scene where he's standing kind of like does the crouch thing with his abs. That's the one shot Yeah, the only reason why he's in that movie. Again. I sometimes challenge myself with Can I go through talk and scene by scene and then I try to go shot by shot but that's it. That's a lot harder, but I can definitely Yeah, anyway. Okay, I know Top Gun. Um, second thing I really hate about this movie is Tom Skerritt fingering his mustache. I hate it. Like 10 minutes before this part of the movie came up. I just started like getting queasy about it because he does this thing. Maverick and goose are being reprimanded for doing the flyby. And Viper is like, looking out the window just like but would you want him up there with you? And then he takes two fingers, rubbed it down his moustache, put those fingers in his mouth and then touches his chin. Why? See, what I tried to explain to Olivia is that when you're a man, and you have a mustache, sometimes you just want to play around with it. Sometimes you want to twirl it sometimes you want to do shit. I justified that scene to her by saying maybe he had some crumbs in there. And he was a little hungry. And he just wanted to get it in there. It's just it's one of the three things I hate about this movie. It's just the end. He does it again later. Like he just keeps touching his moustache. I'm like, Please stop. It's making me uncomfortable. And then the third and final thing I hate about this movie, it's the sex scene. It's not because they're having sex. It's just how they do it. And like, he licks the roof of her mouth. Why? Why does he do that? Why is it all tongue? I hate it this, like the lighting and the silhouette. It's sexy. It's beautiful. But like what they're doing is people just creeps me out. And like, I once I dated a guy who like knew I like talking a lot. He like, thought I would want to make out like the people on talking and he was worried about it. And he told me that and I was like, Dude, it's a fucking movie. Like, why would you? Why would you think I'd want to like recreate that? But yeah, I just you know, like, there's they're like, just like, look away and then turns off his silhouette lighting. Oh, uh, yeah. Anyway, those are the three things I hate about topcon. What I love though. Yeah, favorite background character is at the beginning when there's like all the planes they're loading up. And there's this one guy who does like an air guitar thing with with finger guns. That guy's awesome. We love him. Yeah. I know, it's I have, so I rewatch Top Gun again today. Because as when we when we watched it, we were just talking over and having a good time. But I was missing half the lines. And I knew if I wanted to make any kind of discussions and actually talk about in depth in any kind of way, I knew I needed to rewatch it because I'm not as familiar with it as you are. Which is so odd because I always thought that you loved it more than I did. And now it's like, it's it's less of that and more of the movies that I really love. I'll have a familiarity with them. But I don't rewatch them often. I'll rewatch them once every four or five years. That way I can kind of forget what they are and forget what happens. So when I come back to them, it's like an another new viewing experience. I know I'm going to enjoy it, but I'm getting something new out of it. There will still be scenes that I remember that I get a kick out of but they're all Be new context provided for me. So that's why, you know, like Jani and I had this discussion where I tell him I don't like rewatching stuff. And that's part of the reason why. I mean, Raiders of the Lost Ark is a movie I really love. And I try my best to only see it when I absolutely have to work. There's a special reason because I don't want to ruin that specialness for me. And that's the same thing with topcon. I don't I really love this movie. So for me, rewatching and again and again and again, would ruin that. I mean, I'm watching. Right now I'm watching Avatar The Last Airbender with my roommate, I don't really rewatch TV shows, but this is one of the few and I last watched that show about four years ago. There's a lot that I remember, but there's a lot I forgot, and I'm so glad to see it in a new light and and see in a new way. So that's the same thing with Top Gun or anything else. I every time I watch this movie, it you know, that's kind of the hallmark, I think of a great movie that I really love. Every time I watch it, I can get something new out of it, because it's so well crafted, and so well made. This particular time when we were watching it, it's almost like a blessing in disguise in the sense of us talking over it. Because of that, I wasn't necessarily able to hear all the dialogue, which I really love, but I'm more so how to focus on the visuals. And it really made me see and understand the visuals and see the visuals in a new light. Because Tony Scott just does such a fucking good job. So good. He shoots the film so well every frame is so well staged. It's so well shot. The colors are so vivid, and vibrant. And the oranges are really strong. The Blues really strong when we have characters that are inside like on a flight deck and everything and we see all the lighting and the sweat dripping down the characters faces like in when they're in a submarine. There's like the blue and the red. Yeah, yeah, it's so well fucking shot. Like everything. There's that a bad shot, even even minor things. I mean, one scene that really stood out for me in particular, that is a minor scene, but I just was watching it was blown away. It was later on in the movie when Maverick lost his Mojo. And after it gets off the plane with sundown, and they have their little confrontation. Just it's such a minor scene, but it's so well shot. It's so visually striking it how Tony's got. I'm assuming he did a long lens, use a low aperture and made everything really sharp focused and everything. It just looks beautiful. Everything comes together so well. And that's one thing I really picked up on this time. What rewatching the movie, it's just a beautiful fucking film when when I think of like the prettiest shots and Top Gun I think about when Maverick is sitting on the tarmac on his motorcycle, and it's like, I think it's sunset and there's like planes coming in. There's also like when they're in the submarine and it's like the really like striking blue and red lights. There's that one shot it's like the it's the last is the practice that they go on before goose dies or that plane is flying. And there's that like fume cloud right behind that just like swirls out. But I think the prettiest scene in this movie is winning out scene. It's no that which that is beautiful too. But no the prettiest scene, it's after the homoerotic volleyball and Maverick goes to Charlie's house and they're out in the back and there's just a shot of like there's light through like a green glass or like a wine bottle. And it's just that that beautiful green and the film grain. And I just I always every time we come back to that scene, I just I always remark on like, how beautiful that that one shot is and how much I love seeing that and like you wouldn't expect that in like a 1980s Cold War action movie but like there's just such beauty in it too. And like in the dresses that some of the women wear collars. Oh, ever everything comes together. So well. Yani always makes light of the films I pay and calling them a shitty tapestry because there's all these pieces that are in his eyes, bad or awful, or all these minor nitpicks that he can throw at it, where if you're going to call films, tapestries, and every little piece matters, which it does, Tony Scott does such a great job at making sure every piece of this film matters from the actors he chooses to the cinematography to the lighting. Yep, to The score and the songs. I mean, everything comes together and coalesces just just right just perfectly, we have to go into the editing too, because like, yeah, it's so easy to get lost and like you're, you're a plane in the sky. And it's like, there's no one at line, like, you have no, you're in a three dimensional space rather than like a set where like, you can just pick and choose like, what you're going to look at, like, they did such a good job where like, I try to get every time I try to go through and see if they messed up any of the flight sequences. But no, they all they're all cohesive. Not once Do you feel like you're lost in like, actual airspace like it's done so wonderfully. And I think if if it wasn't done to such a high degree, or to such a high standard, like we wouldn't be talking about this, maybe today, like it wouldn't have had the impact that it did. Two things I want to say off of that. First of all, one, one of the shots that really struck me this time watching was in the beginning when when Maverick is rescuing Cougar, and we have that kind of tilty shot from cougars POV as he's going back to the plains like ship. Yeah, yeah. And you have the sunset behind him and everything. Fucking gorgeous. It was just beautiful. But to go off of what you're saying, talking about why we remember this film, I agree. But I also think one of the gems of this film, why we continue to talk about it, but at the same time, I don't think is not really acknowledged as much that this film is such a strong character film. I mean, at the end of the day, if you think about it, this is essentially an action film. Without the action. It's a but it's like a buddy action film without the action. And it just focuses on the buddies and it just focuses on the characters. We love the characters. We love the lines, we love Maverick, and wall Maverick. Yeah, you could make an argument that he's just the generic Hot Shot character. At the same time, I feel like he has a lot more depth and nuance. And I definitely would say he's more so a almost a deconstruction of that character, and evolves that character further than most films want to go. And part of that is because they don't have to deal with. I mean, they have the action with the training and everything. But it's not a straight up like this is the bad guy got a bit the bad guy seen the bad guys are relevant. It's not about that. It's about the team. It's about everyone work. I mean, Iceman is quote, unquote, the bad guy, the film, but he's still another member of the team. It's not like he's some conniving villain. That's one No, in any of these other movies. He's still a character, you know, right. Well, and you can also say like, because we do have like two scenes with the quote unquote, bad guys, but that's just more to show like how much he's, I feel like they're just there to show how much like Mavericks grown from the beginning to the end. Exactly. I think what what really works is that this movie, at the end is that at the end of the day is a competition. But even though it's a competition, and they all want to be Top Gun, when it boils down to like actual danger, they have to be together. And so like you could say, Iceman is the villain, but honestly, you could say Mavericks, the villain, too, because he's the one flying by the seat of his pants taking these risks, and like, he's never by his wing man. And that's an issue at the beginning of the movie with Cougar. And that's ice man's main issue with Maverick is like, you're dangerous. When you fly. All you care about is yourself. You're not here for the team. And it's Maverick learning about how to be part of a team. One of the things I wrote down was, I think, in that same scene, Iceman says this line, he says, It's not your flying, it's your attitude. And I think that quote, sums up with the movie perfectly. Because Maverick, there's no question that he's a good pilot, everyone constantly tells him he's a good pilot. But his problem isn't that though his problem is how he approaches things. He's a very selfish character. In the beginning, he flies by the seat of his pants, he takes unnecessary risks that end up getting his best friend killed. And something were in another movie, you'd have Maverick go back out there and somehow be number one in his class or continue along his flying career where he comes to this understanding that no, that's not the path for me even though I'm a really it basically, he learns a lesson. The lesson being that he it's not all about him. And there's more to this, you got to work together. You got to be a team player. But you also can't let all this arrogance and ego go to your head because in the beginning, the Everyone is very egocentric and arrogant. You have Maverick, you have Iceman. I mean, the first scene in the academy in Hollywood, they're just trash talking to each other, talking about how great everyone thinks they are. And even Viper has a comment when he's talking to Maverick is like, you're arrogant. I like that. No, he says, I like that in the pilot. Yeah. So he's like, so this film is essentially encouraging that attitude in the beginning, where Maverick and this goes along with a deconstruction throughout the course of this film. And because of his failure, with goose and everything, he learns that, you know, having that ego deck and fuel you in some ways, but it's not enough. That's not the right course of action, where I would imagine him as an instructor, he's a lot more he's much wiser, and his attitude and his approach with these pilots and wants to simmer them down. Essentially, it's like, I want you to use your skills, but you can't just you can't do what I did. You can't risk everyone else's lies, because it is dangerous up there. Yeah, you got to respect it and be careful. Well, and I think part of that arc, what's really important is like the relationship he has with his dad, yes, goose goose remarks on it after they get in trouble. And he's like, I just want to make it to graduation. And he says Maverick, I feel like every time we go up there, you're fighting up against some sort of ghost. Because Maverick doesn't know what happens to his dad. And I feel like what truly changes Maverick like, obviously, goose is death. And that's where he just wants to quit altogether. But what makes him actually changed as a pilot is hearing what happened to his dad from Viper where it's like, your dad did something risky. But your dad knew that he was going to save people at the end of the day. And it's like, he wasn't risky, just to be risky. He took that risk to save other people. And so I think that's where Maverick seems like he was being risky, just to be risky. where like, you know, it's not it's not because Maverick is taking risk. It's why is he doing that? And that also comes up when they review his flight techniques, too. And they're like, you know, it's risky. It worked out, but I think we've seen it's not what you should normally do. God this, this one was so fucking deep. You know? I love it. It's so and it's because he got Kenny Loggins. They play Danger Zone five separate times. People just don't take it seriously. But like, honestly, if it was just like a regular action movie, we wouldn't be talking about it. Like To this day, like there's something deep at the heart of this movie. And it's like, you know, yes, you know, Maverick is dealing with his like sexuality, but like, it's really Maverick is learning about how to become a better person how to be Xander pilot. Now is that character development going to show up in Top Gun Maverick? No, no, no, I don't know. But I want to I want to make one real quick note. Yeah. So you're just talking about him and his father, one of my favorite lines in this film? Oh, I know where you're going with Charlie. Yeah, is when he's talking to Charlie. And he gives, he gives this monologue about his mother and how great she was and how she died. And Charlie brushes over his mom and says, So tell me about your father. Like they weren't talking about the dad at all. But the movies like, Oh, we need to know more about the dad. So Charlie just totally ignores the mom and just says, Yeah, but your father, it's I it's like, I think that's hilarious. It's the same. It's that same dinner where there's the beautiful green glass and also they're playing, sitting on the dock of a bay by Otis Redding, which was one of his mom's favorite songs. And so that's how it comes up. They're listening to one of his mom's favorite albums. And they just breeze right over the mom. It's like, I don't care. Tell me about that. And we don't hear about the mom ever get ever again. No. Maybe that's something that's a mom Top Gun to know. It's Top Gun Maverick. Maverick. Yeah, I'm interested to see because with with the trailers, like I would get so excited and like cry a little bit, because it seems like you know, obviously Maverick is still Maverick at the end of the day, but I think he just chooses his risk a little bit more. And I'm really interested to see I feel like this is one of the few movies where I'm like, Yes, I want to see where this character is da, like, Yeah, what does happen to dogfighting obviously, like not I had explained to one of my friends, dogfighting incentive, like airplane combat. What happens to that in the time of like, drones and drone strikes? Yeah, like Do we still need pilots? And so I think you're gonna have like an interesting generational gap. Also, from the trailer, it looks like there's sand football, not volleyball, but sand. I saw silhouette there. And whenever I watched the trailer, I was like, Oh my God. They took all the iconic scenes and we're getting them again. Aim Mad, I'm happy, I'll take I'm not mad at all. And I know like there's some people like who were butthurt about that. There's also like a Scarface remake coming out with the Coen brothers and the director. I forget his name, the director for call me by your name that's coming out and people are like, Oh my god, they're remaking Scarface, and like Scarface itself was a remake. So I'm excited to see what the Coen brothers do with it to see. But back to top gun back to that, so I got wrapped into Al Pacino, like everything in my life. You know, everything's that way, though. Yeah. Wait, what if Al Pacino was in top gun? Like he had a secret cameo? he just walks on a flight deck at some point. Yes. Who Ah, and just walks up. And that's it. Because this was this was six years before sent him a woman but let's just pretend that 1985 revolution never happened. He didn't quit film acting. What if instead of Tom Skerritt as Viper? Oh, I don't know if that would work. Right. Like I don't think No, I don't think I think the cast is too perfect. Or he could be the guy who keeps spilling coffee on himself. I don't know the guy that guy that guy. I don't know. alpa Chino yell. I want some butts. I need some bunch. Now. Get me some butts. I want some butts. I want it now. And then he walked. I was like, damn it. That's price and time. Yeah, no, I mean, I will say I think alpa Chino could do that line. I think that's an opportunity line. I think he could but he can't he can't place Michael Ironside, Michael Ironsides. Great Tom scare. It's great. The guy in the beginning. I don't know the actor's name. He's great too. I don't I don't know. I want to replace ours. Like your egos writing checks. Your bodies can't cash. What played out fake dogshit from Hong Kong. It's interesting, because he's the instructor or the top guy who's in it the least is the most forgotten about because usually we think about Michael Ironside or Tom Skerritt. But I think he has some of the best lights. He's got that he does. Do not fire until fired upon. God dammit Maverick. He made a high speed pass at three towers. And one admirals daughter. Daughter. Yes, the admirals daughter. I love that joke. I love the little exchange Maverick and goose have and I love that it comes back later. One of my favorite just like random lines is when goose and Maverick are at the bar. They've had their little thing with Iceman and slider. And he's like, okay, deal is $20 $20 you have to have carnal knowledge of a lady this time on the premises. And it's just that of a lady this time that really gets me because it's like last time they made a bet $20 carnal knowledge of someone on the premises because this time they had to specify of a lady this time. I love that interaction. And I love Kelly McGillis his hair in this movie, like I actually got my hair cut to look like her hair from Top Gun and everyone was like, this is the best haircut you've ever had. Because that's the type of hair that I had. Like, I have that kind of curl. So who knows? Maybe I maybe I'll chop all my hair off. I don't know. I kind of want to see how I can go without getting a haircut. Like, this is just Oh, three years strong. Three years strong. It's really fucking gross, but, and I dyed my hair pink with this with overtone, which is like a leave in conditioner seven weeks ago. And does my hair still look pink? It looks like something it looks. You look like what's the character? No, but you look like Black Widow. Okay, no, that's red. This is this is like rose gold. This is not fucking right. You idiot. I was telling one of my friends that I would love to do a reverse gender Top Gun with Chris Evans as like the romantic Wade kind of like Chris Hemsworth was in the reverse gender Ghostbusters, because I just I need a reverse gender Top Gun like even if it's an anime like that's what I want to make at the end of the day. Reverse gender Top Gun. I need you to delete this from the podcast so no one else can take my idea on keeping it in. Okay, yeah, let's see what else what else is there to say about this movie? Oh, I mean there's so much there. There are so many great songs. Oh, actually. Right now I want to talk about the songs the music because we kind of we brushed on a little bit but it why had me read the soundtrack does so many hats. Let me let me give me a second. I want to pull up the song see if I can name them all. I think I think I can name them all. I mean, even in this We're just talking about the bar scene. It's got in the background, like three gems back to back that are all fantastic and brilliant. And it's just like oh my god, you're sick. I mean, you got the classic you got danger zone a plus and a plus. You have Take My Breath Away which won the Academy Award a plus you have mighty wing my wings. I fucking love mighty wings. Love that take me on your mother wings. You have sitting on the dock of a bay you have a lien on me. Great Balls of Fire. Leave me on destination unknown. Oh my god. Destination unknown. I was listening that the other day. And I was thinking about you that because you matter how you do that thing in the beginning. One thing in the beginning that you used to joke about doing that? Oh, oh. Oh, you can't do it anymore. Do what the beginning here. Let me let me pull it up. Oh yeah, I used to do that part all the time. I, whenever I hear that part, I think about you. Oh, we got that. Like you said great. Got the best song in the movie. Playing with the boys. I think I played I think playing with the boys is a great sign. I want to put the best song in the movie. No, cuz he says in the homoerotic volleyball scene. He's saying an after chasing sunsets, one of life's simple joys is playing with the boys. And if that's not a gay anthem, I don't know what is. I'm not saying it's not. I'm just saying for me personally, it's not my favorite song of the film. It's a great song. And it's a great scene. Whenever, whenever someone talks about beach volleyball, like there was this girl who is bringing that beast peach volleyball to me. And I just wanted to say, Oh, yeah, I know that from Top Gun. I will say when I was on the dating app, I put that like my favorite movie is topkin got a lot of hits from that being like, Oh my God really laptop gun or let's get this one. He was like, finally a woman who? And I'm like, I think he and I enjoy this movie for different reasons. But like yeah, other great songs on hot summer nights through the fire. Hot Summer knives re back up through that fight. And then finally, it's a game. Hmm, I was gonna say you lost that love and feeling. Oh, you never close your eyes anymore. When I kiss your lips. I just want to say that song is great the first time it's used. But the second time at the ending when you have the montage of everybody before the credits. Holy fucking shit. It's just great. It's amazing. You lost love. Oh, love and feel free to Alamo Drafthouse parties. I went and that was the thing that you had to do is sing that song. And I was like, Can we go wherever you want? They're like, yeah, and so one guy the guy was up against he had to stay at the front and like, look at the screen. I had the song fucking memorized. So I went out into the house. My son and I went up to my friend, I was just like, serenading her. And after the after that this is before the movie. I also had, like, I was recovering from bronchitis. So like, my voice was all fucked up. And I was like, I'm still doing it. After the movie. I go to the bathroom and like, wash my hands. And several women were like, Oh, my God, you were incredible. Like, it's amazing. You knew that entire song. And I was like, yeah, this is my favorite movie. It's my second favorite movie. Wayne's World is still my favorite. My number one movie. I mean, yeah, I mean, this movie is just, it's just so rewatchable like, I can sell even rewatching it this morning, even though I just watched it the other day. Still blast. still fun. I always enjoy it. I always get a kick out of it. Yeah, that's something I wanted to talk about as well as because you were talking about earlier how, like you Only you don't like to watch your favorite movies a lot. I'm like, I'm kind of the exact opposite like I I feel like I watch a lot of my favorite movies like, at least once a year maybe once every other year because I just like I love these movies and there's just something about them like with Wayne's World, like again, I'll go to Alamo Drafthouse movie parties, but it's usually something like when I'm watching it again, there's like an occasion so it's like, one of my friends wanted to watch it or they're like there's a screening of it. Or like one of my favorite movies Gladiator anytime I just need to cry. We put on Gladiator in two and a half hours later. That's another movie where like, I have the entire soundtrack memorized all every single quote every single scene. Okay, I gotta ask you a question. Yeah, Tony Scott or Ridley Scott. Oh, my God, you can't make me choose. I'm gonna go with Tony. Hold on, but but really also has alien. I think Ridley is probably a more versatile director in general. But Tony is much more in tune with the shit I really enjoy and really like and what I want to do. So Tony is my boy Tony is where I go. They're both I just I haven't rewired stoppable the other day. Have you seen that movie? No, but that movie helped me make my or get my Brooklyn accent for a play. I was in unstoppable. Yeah, because there's no there was an SNL. I know there was an SNL skit when that movie came out with Scarlett Johansson, where she had like a very exaggerated accent and that's how I like started working on my Brooklyn accent was like, yeah, it's like, um, but no, but but I'm saying because that movie came out. Then there was an SNL skit and Scarlett Johansen had a Brooklyn accent. And it was Scarlett Johansson spoofing that movie that helped me because she said, it's like a missile the size of the Chrysler Building on top of the Chrysler Building. I tell you, that's a great film. You should watch it. I think it's on my list because I saw it was on like Hulu or something. It's also got Chris Pine. I love course, but that was the last movie he did. Right. Chris Pine? Oh, yeah. Tony Scott. Yeah, that was his last film. Yeah, because Top Gun the sequel Top Gun was was in talks before, like several years ago. I love Tony Scott. And it's kind of hard to think about like Top Gun Maverick like doesn't doesn't have him because he was such a huge part of Top Gun. Yeah, I know. I don't I don't know how I feel about that. Because it's is it Joseph Krasinski? Is that the directors name, let me see. But I know like, because there was a talk in sequel in the works like before 2012 when Tony Scott died, but then like it was put on hold, and it's been like eight years, so I'm sure it'll be like dedicated to him. Oh, really? Yeah. It has to be better be if it's if it's not yet. Joseph Kaczynski Joseph Kosinski? Yeah, I mean, what's Joseph Kaczynski, I forgot he did a Tron Legacy, which I actually really loved. I liked great Tron Legacy quite a bit. I wasn't a fan of oblivion. So I don't know how I feel I'm living in i thought was fine. I just wasn't knocked out of the park. I don't I barely remember that movie. So I don't know how I feel about the fact that he's doing the movie. It feels more like Tom Cruise said, Hey, I like working with you as a director, as opposed to you're a director who really connects with the material, but that's my speculation. And that's we haven't seen the movie yet. So I could be 100% wrong. Well, I think if we look, so he's got four movies, which I've seen to have Tron Legacy, which was another like sequel, like decades late sequel. Then there's Oblivion, which is a science fiction kind of action II movie with Tom Cruise. Then only the brave, which I did not say what's only the brave I vaguely remember that. That's the movie with Oh, Miles Teller. Yeah, the one where they're like firefighters. Yeah. I can't too by the biographical drama film written by Ken Nolan. Who did I wonder how Miles Teller got cast then. I wonder Honestly, I will say in the trailer when Miles Teller has the mustache, he looks exactly like Anthony Edwards. Like looks so much like him. So I like I've totally bought that. I also want to talk about Anthony Edwards real quick, because it's something where, you know, I liked goose in previous viewings. I was a big Maverick fan all the way rewatching it I really grew to fall in love with goose. He's such a great body. He's such a fun character is so supportive of Maverick and he's just a great My best friend, and I really I really he really grew on me. And this really, and he's like, he's the one who's like, Hey, stay on his wing where his wing man He's like, don't leave Hollywood. And that's why when goose dies, like Maverick is like, talk to me, goose talk to me, goose. But Maverick I can't Can we say Mavericks? The worst best friend because he like, takes the dog tags and just fucking toss them in the sea. Like it's the fucking Heart of the Ocean. Yeah, I mean, there better be a scene in Maverick where Miles Teller is like, Hey, where's those dog tags? Where's my father's dog tags? Oh, you throw them in the ocean. I kind of wanted to, you know, remember him? I can't wait for rooster to like pretend he has no idea that ice man was involved in his father's death. And then he like it's just an elaborate, just like Iceman had an elaborate plot to murder goose rooster has an elaborate plot to murder Iceman. Do you think Maverick is gonna die in Top Gun Maverick? No. Has Tom Cruise ever died in the movie? Maybe collateral? But I don't know. I didn't see I haven't seen collateral. Like, I can't remember. I don't know if he does or he doesn't think about the Mission Impossible. No. Well, I mean, technically and Mission Impossible three he dies but he comes back with us, you know, but I cannot imagine him dying and Top Gun Maverick. I'd be so shocked. I think that's why they're gonna do it. Like, I don't know just ever since Avengers in game I'm always like, eyes peeled. They're gonna kill my favorite characters. They're gonna kill him. And then it's gonna it's gonna play. You got that love and feeling over his destiny. Oh. There's a shot of the ghosts of Maverick and goose like flying planes in heaven. And they're gonna they're gonna be mid high five. Like the I got the need for speed. Oh, yeah. No, I I love I love goose. And it's definitely one of those things like the more you watch it, the more you appreciate him and what he's there for. When I watched this in college with my roommate, she had never seen it before. And she kept saying, Oh my god, I love goose goose is my favorite character. Like she kept laughing everything he was saying she's like goose is awesome. And I did not tell her anything. Oh, she she had no idea. Did she kill when goose died. She didn't cry. But like her mouth, just like she gasped, her mouth just dropped to the floor. And she just looked at me with his murders. Like she just she just looked at me. She looked back at the screen didn't say anything. They just went up into her room. Oh my god. And I was like, What the fuck? So I paused the movie and waited a few minutes and she came back out and she's like, Olivia, I'm so fucking upset. But I just I need to know what happens. What's the rest of the movie? Yeah, cuz I remember the first time when I really watched it. You know? Like, this is a movie I'm kind of familiar with. I don't know a lot about it. The first time I really watched it. I was I was still kind of shocked by gooses death. Like, you see it, it happened. Like you don't really expect it to happen. And then he's just dead and you're like, Oh, I mean, it's kinda like that. Oh, yeah, I kind of knew he was gonna die. But it's still like upsetting. I gotta be honest with you. I cannot remember the first time I watched this film. I do not. It's just been with me. Yeah, it's, it was I remember one of the one of the earlier times was like in high school, it was on TV and appears like, Oh, it's Top Gun. But it was the part where like, Charlie is like chasing Maverick through the intersection. And for some reason, I was like, Wait, isn't there a weird scene right after this? And so I was like, we're not going to watch so I had some sort of awareness of like, when the weird ass Top Gun sex scene was and I was like, I'm not watching that with my parents. I just really hate all the tongue just not great. You see it? You see the tongue and you see him lick the roof of her mouth. Other lines that I want to highlight because they are some of my most quoted lines that I really love. Oh, can I guess they are you know what they are? Yeah. Okay is one of them when they're in the top and Pilot School for the first time and it's Hollywood and Wolf Man and one of them says this is giving me a hard on that's not one of them the other one right lines with Don't tease me that's not one of the lines but that is so great one line number of them your egos writing checks your body can't cash. The Yeah, that's one of them. But what the quotes I want to give her the ones that we haven't talked about yet. So number one, hey slider, you stink mistake. One of my favorite lines. There's just so it's so unnecessary, but so perfect. It doesn't need to be there and it's so out there, but it works so well within the scene and in their rivalry. It's just perfect. second line is said by Tom Skerritt. Listen, I'm not gonna sit here. Blow sunshine up your ass. Great fucking line. And then just every time someone calls Maverick dangerous, you're unsafe. He's like, That's right ice man. I am dangerous. And then Iseman goes, like, yeah, Olivia just bit her teeth and I really weird Why? Just like ice man. That's right ice man. And he like brushes his shoulder. See that's acting that's a choice to have a separation between ISIS. That's acting right there. Yeah, that's fucking acting. Who knew Tom Cruise Kinect? Let's see. I really love when it's like they're, they're concluding the first day of chalk in school and Mavericks like saying that he's the best and Tom scared. It's like, pretty arrogant. I like that and a pilot, and then Iceman tries to drag Maverick, but it doesn't go so well. And then here's just laughs out of nowhere. He's like, No, no, boys. There's two O's and goose. And it's just, Oh, I love that. So good. And I love love. When Charlie so when they're being instructed by Charlie, when she comes in after her first scene, and everything between her goose and Maverick. So about he was inverted. How goose interjects we Maverick says something about Oh, when I was doing this, and then goose kind of taps him on the shoulder. You mean we? And then Maverick corrects itself is just the little fact that goose has that playful banter. It's just like, Hey, don't forget about me. It's just It's perfect. I love it so much. Also, we did we even talked about the inverted scene. Fantastic. So yeah, so the opening scene of the murder scene, but the best line in this movie comes from Charlie. When she goes you were in a 4g inverted dive with a MiG 28 fucking best line. This goddamn movie, right? Why is that the best line? Because it's just so fun. It's just the way she delivers that line. You were in a 4g inverted dive with the MiG 28 like, they're like yeah, that's right. We got airplane mumbo jumbo in here. 4g inverted dive with a MiG 28 Are you a pilot? No. And you know we were talking earlier about why this movie lasts why we still talk about it and I think part of it going along with everything we said before is how quotable this film is. There are so many fantastic great lines and the lines combined with the performances combined with everything they just become so memorable so easy to quote so fun to use it's it's just magical. I feel the need the need for speed or you gotta wait if you miss quoted, you know I will not highfive you because you miss quoted it earlier this week. Yeah, so in a text exchange, I miss quoted I said I feel the need the need for speed. And Olivia got really pissed at me. Because I got the need. Even though I need to stress I haven't seen those said you said I got the need. And it's I feel I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I fucked up I fucked up. It's just I always so I get my Top Gun Guardian voting. Yes, but so I always thought like, you know, I'm really in a Top Gun, but at least I know one person who's more into it than I am and I find out that's not fucking true. But we both love it. Both guns shirts, there's a picture of us good shirts. I actually one of my co workers was doing like a marathon at like in Austin and ended up being canceled because of rain. This is several years ago but the shirt said Top Gun Yeah, because they were at Camp mabrey and he didn't he's like I don't want the shirt because I didn't run it and I thought about getting rid of it but it had Top Gun Do you want it? I was like yes. And it has like it's like Top Gun on the front and then like all this shit about like marathons and stuff on the back and it's like I do not run this marathon but I fucking love talk and, and my brother bought me a topkin tank top that's coming in. Geez. There's a poster online. I really want to get that poster. The one I sent you. What I really want this I know I just keep talking about me. Yeah, talk about us. Oh, what's up? I have always wanted an original Top Gun movie theater poster from like 1986 listeners. If you want to really help out a girl Send Olivia. original the original Top Gun poster. All my followers. You know here. sure you're loving this episode. Do us a favor. I know if I can fit. There used to be a few places where you can get that kind of stuff. And now I don't know if that exists anymore. And yeah, like I want an original original from 1986 Well, Olivia, we've talked about Top Gun for about an hour and a half. Yeah, it's time to go. Yeah, it's time to call it peace. But Top Gun is great listeners. If you have listened to all this and still haven't seen Top Gun. What the fuck is wrong with you? I don't even know why you started this episode. If you haven't seen Top Gun, watch it again. Because it's a great film. It's a masterpiece. Olivia, any final thoughts? Well, you know, let me ask you this. If you had to give Top Gun a rating what would you give it? Oh my god. Like how many who was at a 10? Just wanted to I want to attach? I would give it a 1986 out of 10. Okay, cool. Perfect. See what I did there? I see. I see what they did there. Because it came out in 1986. Remember when we tried to do a podcast three years ago? 1986. So listeners we without getting into all the minutiae of it. Olivia and I tried to do a podcast three years ago. Yeah, it was 2017 Yeah. And we were just gonna watch all the films from 1986. And it was great. We're doing a good job. And then it just went nowhere. We watched some great films. We watched American anthem. We watched other things, bro. Do you remember anything? We watch? Bad Moon Rising? Um, how many episodes? Yeah, it was. I was I was using someone else's zoom at the time. And then I could no longer use that zoom anymore. And then I was like, fuck it. And then she decided to do her own podcast and not include me. So I said, Okay, fine. I'll do my own podcast, too. You're gonna be on my No. That's a movie. You're gonna watch Sean. Yeah, no, I'm gonna be I mean, honestly, this is. This is like the fifth podcast idea I've had and it's one of those were like, I was like, 2020 or watching all of LPN tomography. And maybe I'll make a podcast about it. Because like, if I'm gonna dedicate an entire year of my life to Albertina, why shouldn't everyone else hear about it? I mean, honestly, so far, even though I have qualms about podcasting, and I vent to you about it, I still really liked the space. And I very much want to be within it. You know, I mean, at this point, I don't want to say I've given up on Phil, but I'm that I'm not actively pursuing it while I'm actively pursuing podcasting, because at the end of the day, I like the medium. I like listening to folks. And having that conversational aspect. I like doing this because it's something where you can produce your content, you have all this flexibility and freedom to do your own thing without that hurdle to really get your foot in the door. I mean, it doesn't really matter if five people listen to it, or 50,000 as long as you're still being able to actively put your own voice out there. It still has value. You know, I mean, I think your podcasts are a great testament to this, because your podcast is really fun, and funny. And most of the episodes are with you and Shelby and you guys have such a great dynamic you work so well together, similar to how Jani and I worked together. I mean, Jani and I are more abrasive while you and shall we are much more together and then sank. But it's still like your co hosts have chemistry with you, you know, and I think you guys do such a great job and you're so engaging, and just a great listen to. I can't stress this enough. It's really enjoyable to listen to. And I look forward to it. Every time every every week. I get to listen to it. It's literally just me and my friends watching alpa Chino during the time of Coronavirus. It started before Coronavirus. And now it's like I just call up my friend. We watched a movie together at the same time. And as soon as we finished it we record hopefully unless maybe it's really bad like tape for the month. But I think you you You're a great host and you have a great personality and I think it works. And it's just you just record with your resume and you have your friend, your co host Shelby on a video chat, and you record it that way. It's not the most technically proficient and I'm not trying to knock you but what I'm saying is who gives a fuck because the quality of your content is the hope point is that Emily? Yeah, that's, that's the point too is that like, I don't really care about the quality because it's like, I can't be in person, I don't want to try to like, make, I don't want to go to all these extreme lengths to make things sound like it's, I don't want to, you know, it's like we're not in person. And the phone call makes me feel like, you know, it's a product of the time, which is that like, we can't be together when like, we're only like, I'm literally only experiencing social interaction through phone calls. And to try to fake social interaction just seems kind of weird. I mean, yeah. But like, my point is, you don't need all that shit. As long as you as the host, as the person are doing what you want to do. And I, something that directing Professor gave me during the last class, she gave us this quote, that basically can be summed up as, don't worry about whether what you're making is good, or it's a quote, unquote, quality, worry about how you're expressing yourself, make sure it's what you want to be expressing make sure it's what you want to be putting out in the world. So now when I make my stuff, whether it be this podcast or films, I honestly don't give a crap about how it's received, what the quality is, or in my better than somebody else. Because you know what, what we're doing, it does not matter that recording quality at the end of the day really does not matter. What matters is how we are expressing ourselves and how we are putting ourselves out. And much like Top Gun. This Top Gun is a film that expresses itself fully and knows what it is Tony Scott, Tom Cruise, everyone involved in the film doesn't give a rat's ass what you think quality should or shouldn't be. It says, we know what we wanted to achieve with this film. We know what we wanted to be. And we're going to do that. And it worked. It achieved that in spades. So no, no, that's a roundabout way of going about that. But, you know, no, no, I'm complimenting you. And I'll compliment the top. Thank you. Yeah, yeah, that's kind of what I came down to that like with this, it's just more of like, it's a fun thing. It's a nice project to have while I'm, you know, literally spending every single day completely by my oil. I have two cats, but you know, I'm spending every day by myself. And so it's just nice to have something else to like focus on. And it's also nice to just celebrate Al Pacino. And it's a good excuse to be like to have a social interaction. What even though it's virtual, like, once or twice a week, just like cop friends be like, Hey, we're watching opportunity this week. Hey, we're going to be watching this movie this week. Hey, we're gonna watch this TV show. So it's like it's an excuse to also like see my friends. Because half the time I don't want to talk about the movies because I just don't fucking care unless it's a really good movie like fuckin Scent of a Woman she's okay and there's if you listen to the two for the money podcast episode, they talked about two for the money for maybe three minutes at best because that would be so fucking bad. I like what I like the first half of two for the money I mean, that's not bad. And you know, like not Top Gun um, alpa Chino does say one of my favorite Al Pacino lines in this movie where he's like, your clients are jumping ship you lactose intolerant, but yeah, you guys quote it all the time. All the time. We caught that all the time. Panic in needle Park. I was gonna marry Oh, I was gonna marry a heart Scent of a Woman. Oh my god. Can you talk about the Scent of a Woman woman has the best. Like, when in doubt, fuck. He says that to a cat or either on an airplane, and it's alpa Chino and a 17 year old boy, I'm pretty sure you 17 go to New York City. They're flying even though they're in like New Jersey. You're flying to New York now in New York City, but they're flying out of the Newark Airport. Because again, I'm from New Jersey. So I recognize the airport. Why would you fly it doesn't make any sense. Why would you fly like I had to go from New York Newark to New York City and I just took a cab like where you can get like a not a cab like I had a car like a ranch is a little bit cheaper than a cab But anyway, your city your city sitting at home with the Braves like law overhaul or when he's like he's describing women to Chris O'Donnell see and he's like kids who are big ones will once nipples staring right at at your secrets like search lights. Like what the fuck is that all about? What I what I was like, Oh, he's like, No, I said I was gonna blow my brains out. Have a bread roll Charlie, I buttered it for you. Like what the fuck? What I love most about that movie is it just feels like the director had an idea of one thing and then alpa Chino said you know what? I'm just gonna do my own thing it's just so fucking out there but he's Oh, we got a moron here. He's a real wildcard but in the best possible way I love it like you were never gonna see another movie anything like Scent of a Woman like when you watch Top Gun you can think like oh like there's other like Navy impulse movies like battleship or even Dunkirk where they have like the the flight sequences right like you see red I still feel like Top Gun super unique. It's It's a unique movie but you still see remnants of it and other places. Yes. You know, Scent of a Woman is uniquely just there. There will never be another movie, anything like it ever. All right. I want to remake Scent of a Woman with alpa Chino reprising his role as a real actor. Yeah, and you know what I want Chris to do? I want sent a woman again, but now like it's 2020 who would direct? Me obviously. Well, Olivia, this has been a blast. Thank you for being part. Oh, so so we can go on talking about Thomas soon incentive a woman comes up. Now if you want to talk about I can still I just know I had a choice right now. I think I can either wrap it up. Or I can say can we pause? I need to pee right now. And then we can come back. Shawn. I was trying to be funny. God, I'm not actually upset. It's been like two fucking hours. Oh, yeah. No. Tompkins a great movie. So a sensible woman. Yeah. I love Top Gun. I love Scent of a Woman. Olivia, thank you for being part of this podcast today. Thank you for being on. Yeah, your opinion. Yeah, listeners check out Olivia's podcast your upper Chino. Olivia. Have a good Yeah, normally Jani and I tell each other to go fuck yourselves. I'm not gonna say that to you. Olivia. You have a great day. You have a wonderful day, son. I'm sure I'll text you tomorrow. Okay, cool. Bye.
