Enjoy the Episode Hello and welcome to fuck your opinions a movie review podcast with yours truly Sean Really? And my co host Johnny ponza scope Scotto you have something you want to say? Jani? Oh someone say Jani to say you know we both silent for the past like week or so like because I was waiting for him to say so because I was waiting for him to say and you know and and with my editing the silence the silence is good get cut. Can we take a drink now drink some angry orchard now as we do this. I want to take a what a piece by the way, right? Drinking an angry orchard. It's on your right now and he's drinking an angry orchard. It's the day before Christmas Eve right now. By the way, folks? What does that matter? Why can I drink the 930 in the morning? Drinking while it's post lunchtime. And certainly lunchtime. You can drink during lunch? Why do you gotta make up lies about me like when you lie about when you could take my movies and lie about what God is in that movie you know greatness doesn't exist. Problem. My problem. Okay. Your problem we both know you have a problem shot. I have a problem. What what first you're drinking at 930 in the morning on a Wednesday next year lying about the time that we're recording I think I think you just need to have your come to Jesus moment. You need to stand in front of the mirror and say all right, sir, you are ill. Okay, cool. Well, listeners, while Jani chastises me for lying, even though I'm telling the truth. He is possibly the biggest liar I've ever known. He has told me I've been wise to everyone in his life all the time. I have. That's number one false witness. He's lying to you too. I won't get into specifics, but he's a fucking liar all the time, about everything. That's all all say. So what are we watching this? Why should we watch Magic Mike? Magic Mike. The next in the series of promise, I promise you Shawn straight. The next in that series of films of Shawn reassuring every listener that he is a heterosexual male. I promise you guys I am straight. When I when I woke up this morning, I proved to myself that I'm straight. If you know what sport is still still more homoerotic. It's still the far more homoerotic. But here's here's the thing. Like I don't I don't want to foreshadow too much about what we're going to talk about movie, but I honestly have almost no interest in talking about the actual stripping of this movie. It's I mean, we'll get into I know you're a pro, which is a bit ironic. But I also find it a bit ironic that we're nearing Well, we've actually recorded around 30 episodes or so now. And we've This is our second male stripping movie. male stripper. Yeah, I was going to say that. The Strip scene in in full monty sexier than anything else in this movie? film. I'm sorry. Hold on. I will catch myself. This is a film. I mean, Magic Mike is a film jack dively. objectively, I'm not trying to. At least I didn't feel like I had to wash myself. You're walking in a corner Ramadi striptease objective. I mean, when I saw What's the fucking guy's name? The old guy. Oh, yeah, that's right. The old guy. No, I don't remember his name. But the old guys know what I'm talking about. No, I really don't. Tom Wilkinson. Tom Wilkinson. When you see his ass crack at the end. Do you really think that was sexier than Matthew McConaughey is dance his striptease. It was real. It was a real buttocks. You're saying Matthew McConaughey. his buttocks wasn't real? No, no. In this movie. He looks like he looks in this film. I'm sorry. This is going to be real hard for me. In this film. He looks like the vitruvian man. I'm not going I can't fault Matthew McConaughey his body in this film at all. It's it is it is spectacular. So I see the appeal, but I felt gross watching him every time he was on stage. I just felt gross. I felt like I needed to go wash myself with some very, like very slowly dripping bubbles. And not in a nice like, wet spot. Do you feel gross because of how you felt that has the feelings it elicited in you? Is that why you felt gross? Because I was able to watch it very objectively and go Okay, this is an interesting scene. There's interesting things going on here. Well, you you got interesting that we don't say you're sorry, you're not Catholic. You're what a Greek Orthodox right? You're you got to break your orthodoxy. Oh, on it. Don't drag me down. Don't put me Don't put me on a on a tear with the Catholics. We're above that. All right. Don't put me down there. Well, you're both in my book. You're both pretty far down. But, you know, some you don't want to know how far down you are in our book. Yeah, sure. So why did you choose this film? I want to say real quick. Yani and I were having a quick discussion. This didn't get recorded. But since we're talking about the topic of God, I thought it should be mentioned, he was saying that I was never born he wish I'd never existed, right? He said, Well, what I said was, what I said was I didn't hate his life. I just hated his existence, I believe was was the phraseology that I used. Yes. And then we were getting the specifics of that. And then Yanni likes to mention that he likes to imagine I wasn't born that I was kind of just secreted out of the earth, right? A goo No, no, no. Yeah. Sean like to say that he was stacked like he was just what was it, you were like this not stack, there was a word you use for it. Something that implied that he was put together like he was pieced together, there was some sort of consciousness, but behind the configuration I've been seeing, and I said that he was more of just like this gelatinous goo that foamed up from a fissure in the earth. And I I said to him, okay, so what you're saying I wasn't born, which means I'm kind of like, God, I was there in the beginning, I just kind of popped up, and I'm gonna be out there at the end. And Jani was just like, you know, if, if, in this universe, you end up being God. If you, Shawn, are God, then I might as well become an atheist. Because there's just no point to it. And even Yeah, even if I'm standing eye to eye with you, while I'm about a foot taller than you, even if I'm looking down into your eyes, and you reveal yourself to God as God to me, I would rather live under the false pretense that there is no God than accept you as a reality. Yeah, it's just that me as a God would be so disappointing. That just to everyone devastating mass suicides worldwide. If you're the Epiphany, let's keep going. Alright, well, you know, sacrilegious to say why guys fail, then my Hell is called war on repeat, just FYI. So you might want to actually go there happily, highly. Anyways, why did I pick this film? This film? I mean, aside from that, as well, it is a film by the ways, semantics, listeners, first time listeners, yani, basically, you're just as if a movie is just fun, and not really about anything. It's a movie. If it has themes and is trying to say something. It's a foul. That's boilerplate version. I don't agree with him. But that's how he likes to look at things. So that's why he's going to constantly correct himself as film much to his chagrin. Anyways, why did I get so used to calling your your pictures movies? Because you're very seldom pick a film. But anyways, why did you make a choice? Go ahead and tell us why did I pick it? Well, there were a couple of reasons why I picked that. As mentioned in the last podcast, we watched a movie on the Criterion Collection, and well, I don't really like a whole lot of Criterion Collection movies. I do love one of the directors. They feature quite a bit Steven Soderbergh. And I had wanted to bring a Steven Soderbergh film onto the podcast for quite a while, I was debating which one but I really, I going along with the Justice podcast, but also editing some episodes of getting really upset at Jani. I knew I had to pick a movie that he would just really, really really really not care for. Preferably hate and if there's one film that I knew he was gonna hate, that I was gonna like, cuz I saw this originally back in 2012, but I haven't seen it since. So I mostly forgot it. It was going to be Magic Mike. So I picked magic like kind of going in a little blind. Usually when I pick a movie, it's something that I've seen more recently. And something that, you know, it's more of a rewatch where this I wasn't nervous. And I didn't say to myself, Oh, man, am I still gonna like this? I legitimately just forgot a lot about what I liked about the movie. And rewatching It was almost like watching it again for the first time, and reminding myself how great it is. But also, when I first watched it back in 2012, I was working at a movie theater, I was graduating, I think I just graduated high school. I was going to college, so I didn't have really the life experience that I do now. So looking back and reflecting, it's definitely looking at it from a different perspective, but still really interesting and fascinating. Also, yeah, Jani. I don't know. Have you been able to see the hat I'm wearing? Um, it looks like it's a hat with the word magic on it. And I can't see the word underneath. Magic mark. Why do you have a hat that says magic Mark? Yeah, I have a hat. This is magic mark. I had I got a custom hat. It says magic mark. pocket. Why not? It cost $100 that says match. Other people. Look, people stop me in the street. As I'm watching wearing the magic Mark hat. They asked me what is magic mark, and I just I look at them dead in the eye. I shrug. I just walk away. I do not clarify whatsoever. I do a little here's a really quick story about some things you found in the theater cleaning up after showings of Magic Mike. Yes, yes. So couple funny stories about the Magic Mike. theater experience. So found a couple use condoms on that theater. found someone found a big Bag of Weed at some point. Okay, keep them also final story I will tell about this. I can't remember. I'm sure I've told you this, but I can't remember. So when we were showing this movie, again, it was a very transitional time in my life. I was very excited for what the future brought ahead. And then I was also young and brash. And I was leaving. I was I quit the movie theater. I think I really put my two weeks notice and so I kind of went Fuck it. So. So when people are leaving the theater, you hold the door open for them as the Usher and you say thank you have a good night, etc, etc. And you just kind of say to everybody, right? And I want to throw some spice into it. So what did I do? Well, I rolled my shirt up did a little dancing. I got some dollar bills. Oh, are you done yet? Oh, I'm sorry. That was just so criminally unfunny that I had to find other things to look at while you were telling that story. I'm like about it. I don't care what you think is funny. I think it's funny that I did that. So what's your rating? My rating? I actually didn't think about what I would write this. I really pay you to stop by the way, but they weren't paying me. Jesus Christ. If you got anybody. It's like Saad, please put your shirt back on. Okay, I'll put all I really I'm kind of really fickle with this rating, and I might change it later. I want to show it goes. ratings. If I'm allowed vowel allowed to go with a decimal? I don't know are decimals allowed? Jani? Um, I don't remember. Honestly. I can never remember where we Yeah, let's all think about it. Oh, how about for no for right now? It's a no but once we get to my rating, olive Olive figured it out all of that now I think for right now. It's gonna be a yes. And then maybe I'll revoke that later. So right now let's know I am your guest. Guest every time what's your rating? You're not a guest. You're like the kid. You're not a guest. You're part of this thing whether you like it or not? Well, I part of it for about, you know, half an hour whenever whenever they remember. I'm there. Yeah, yeah. Then anyways, I want to give it a 7.9 I don't really have the heart to give it an eight. But that being said, part of my hesitation just comes from. It's not 100% my type of movie and what I'm looking for in a movie. That being shot. I think I'm sure about that. But I think Steven Soderbergh does such an excellent job with the material that he elevates it far more than I would have expected. It also wasn't hard for him to elevate it was not Jesus. I mean, also I not not to not to segue too much, but I just watched. Let them all talk with Meryl Streep on HBO max. That's a movie That again I have to remember to trust Steven Soderbergh because I was so unexcited for it I kept putting it off and telling myself Why on earth would I want to watch this? I don't think I don't know if it's going to be any good. And honestly, it was fucking great. It was first of all, I think it's just real quick. I think it's a better oceans like all female oceans movie than oceans eight because oceans a is even though there's no heist or con or anything. stylistically the oceans movies absolutely needs Steven Soderbergh and Ocean's eight is the worst for it. And it's just such a mediocre heist movie because of that, fuck Gary Ross. You can do other things, but you cannot do an oceans movie. That's awesome. But I'll also say the interesting thing about that movie, Jani, as I've told you to see it, is because in order much it's very much mirrors our relationship Yani is very much the Meryl Streep in that movie. I bet more talented and attractive, least look far less successful. But in terms of the stuff you guys like, and what you write about, you very much gravitate towards, I don't know, literally just writing about your life and saying is this art, but writing about your life in such an introspective and boring way, as well as using your friends as a muse? Shawn's exaggerating here, by the way, that what he's referring to is this one thing I wrote about him years ago, I'm your muse. Your you were once you were once my muse but now you you've you've succumb to the drink, I will forever be your muse. Don't lie, you know, you know, that's why you continue to talk to me. So you can find out all all the scandalous details of my life and how sad Oh, what are those details of your life? When was the last time you left the house for anything that wasn't a why sorry, scandalous. The correct word, the sadness, the inherent sadness that I like, so tedious, you live a tedious life, and then you take that and just make up some lies. As we've established. You lie all the time. You know, I don't know about that. So I will sprinkle some of the truth. Make a turn, I will make a turn with it that no one cares about no one reads. And you know, well, as you know, the people I've showed it to they enjoyed it. So I think we should keep going. I was one of them talking about I did Magic Mike, as we've been talking for 20 minutes now, and very less time has been spent analyzing this film. Alright, so first time listeners what we usually do next is the opposer the disinterested or disaffected party goes ahead and they provide a quick Plot summary. I'm gonna go ahead and do that. Mine's very short sweet to the point. Channing Tatum stars as Channing Tatum in Magic Mike the Channing Tatum story or How I Learned to Stop stripping and nothing else that's basically it he learns the the the very unique story that working in an industry built entirely upon exploiting weak human weaknesses and vices is not quite all it's cracked up to be the end. That's an hour and 15 minutes of your life saved. You know, I hate to say this I hate listeners. You know how much I loath to give Jani a compliment of any kind. You almost had a funny and good Plot summary until you got to Channing Tatum learns nothing else. You could have had a great singer thing and you just bump you bummed it it is just it's just okay so here's everything that I wanted to say that was solid let me fit and you fucked it up or fell or on your face but or was or how I learned to stop stripping and love the clock as a reference to Magnolia but you would have to sense what happens in the movie that's not what he doesn't start loving it but you know maybe some of the viewers in this podcast it were their listeners not viewers FYI wait times out to clarify that with you know viewers I'm talking about there are two people performing this podcast right now. We both viewed this film and one of us is also going to supply a plot summary now and that is shot. Hi, I see what you did there you fuck. Go fuck yourself. And podcast. Alright. Plot summary. God I really don't like doing the plot summaries the most boring and I I'm really bad at this. I really just just do these stealing something. Yeah, I'm gonna rip the band that is on the list. Just do it. Go down. That's the thing. Okay, okay, we got two lead characters we got Channing Tatum was Magic Mike, we got Alex. I don't know how to pronounce his last name pettifer. Something for pedophilia as the kid. So basically got Magic Mike, who has been stripping for a little bit. And Alex, who's a young kid who's down on his luck looking for some kind of job. It's not like he's lucky. He's just lazy. Yeah, that too. he's a he's a fuckup. in many regards, but still down on his luck. He's not he's not a he's not a character you necessarily root for. But regardless, Mike sees potential on him, brings them to their strip club and introduces him to the world of male stripping. As the kids, Alex rises up and gets better in his stripping abilities, and dancing and whatnot, we hear and falling into that world, Mike is becoming more and more disillusioned with it and wanting to get out. Because the entire time we know that it's not his passion, his passion is more so building custom furniture, custom furniture, which you'll hear about several times. Yes. What she is trying to basically start his own business and using the his earnings from stripping as well as roofing and other things that we don't really do much detail of. But anyways, he's trying to basically start his own business and go into his passion. But he's struggling to do some things for grass. And at the end of the day, Mike chooses to leave that stripping world and forego all that to find some aid to a this is more of a B, but not necessarily sleep with her. He could eat. Yeah, but he's more so looking, real and authentic relationship. He's looking for a real and authentic relationship. And that's why he cares about her and why he goes to her, as opposed to someone like Olivia Munn. Yeah, he he can get it if he wants to. It's not like he can't get it. Oh, he can't get it from Olivia Munn. After a certain point. Yeah, after a certain point, but I'm saying in general, in general, it's not like he can't get it if you want to find a new Olivia Munn, he easily could but he's not searching for that he's searching for something more. And that's what basically this movie is about and what I'll get into later, Mike's quest for a more meaningful life. Yeah, that's the plot summary. Next, next bit of business. Next thing we do here is green tea. Green tea quote, because, as we all know, why not I'm drinking the yogi green tea as we do this know who's drinking orchard angry orchard cider. I drink both at 945

on a Wednesday. It's 12:

51pm out here in Los Angeles. You're so sad. On Wednesday, I'm drinking angry orchard. I'll admit, I haven't had lunch yet. So I'm a bit fucking hungry and pest. But that doesn't negate the fact that I had to give you my peace, my Yogi green tea quote to qualm our disagreement, our bitterness and resentment towards each other. So the quote is empty yourself and let the universe fill you. I think that's a good quote for Magic Mike. Because he empties himself totally superficial and meaningless when you actually wallet is is everything and then fills himself with true love and compassion and realness. Anyways, let's get into this. Jani. Let's start you off. What? Oh, okay. I have to start. Okay. Well, can I make a recommendation? I think that we should start with your first point and my third one because we have some overlap here. We there are things we have overlap in our likes, as well as our dislikes and the sense of what some of my likes are his dislikes. So we can talk about that later brush up on each other. So anyways, okay, what what is what is neutral likes, Sean. Sean, I thought Matthew McConaughey his performance really stood out from the entire from the entire cast. His was the really one that was really good. I don't know if you want a Spirit Award for that deserving of an Oscar nomination he should have got because he doesn't really he doesn't really do a lot in this story. He's not in a lot of it. Not to say that you have to be in a lobby for five minutes and want to fucking Yeah, I think that's what I'm saying. I'm saying you don't have to be but it's not so. Good that he may be a little dubious if he won Best Lead Actor but I think supporting he deserve not lead not even supporting No, it's good. It's really good. But he doesn't really do that much for the story. He's kind of like he's not even like an antagonistic force in the film. He's just like this. He's a thematic contrast between he's he's a CD dramatic contrast to what Channing Tatum wants out of his life. Yeah, and I think that's super interesting. Wow. He's really only good when he's on the stage. Like, that's it when he's performing to a crowd. That's when his his character is at its best. And he's really good. And you know, I'll give you He only strips once that was probably in his contract that he was only going to do it once does it towards the end? And it's probably the one of the better dances one of the better choreographed dances. It's at their farewell performance, I think, right? That's when it happens. Yeah, so we put a lot of time into it. Which, you know, I don't know if Matthew McConaughey was ever a stripper. I'm willing to bet that he wasn't. It's it shows a lot of dedication to the role that he learned to do everything he did. Not to say Channing Tatum doesn't deserve praise for it. But as we all know, this was Channing Tatum's life for several years. In his late teens, early 20s. He was a stripper This wasn't this performance, or at least all the onstage choreography wasn't totally new to him. So Matthew McConaughey is performance pretty good, pretty inspiring. Everyone else is either not good or mediocre at best disagree. She's continue on with Matthew McConaughey. I actually kind of disagree with you a bit. You were saying that he's at his best when he's on stage. I think he's great on stage but i think is the far more interesting and better acted scenes are all off stage. Particularly when he's training the kid in the gym. So he's teaching the kid how to dance. I think that was fantastic scene. Because that's the thing is like it he key commands the scene whatever he's in he he's he commands if he's like, in a one on one. He's on a one on one discussion or interaction with another character. Yes, he's commanding it. But in the dialogue scenes where he's actually speaking with one of the other actors, ie Channing Tatum's care, ie, Mike IE, actually, who else does it he talks to the kid. But I didn't find any of the other performances terribly good, especially Channing Tatum's. So it was a little bit distracting to me. Most of his scenes where he's interacting with another character, because the person he was acting with just wasn't giving him a lot. However, this this scene that you're talking about where he's training with the kid, whatever this guy's name is, by the way I owe him I'm not gonna tell you. Okay, so I looked his name up before we started doing this. And I forgot already, so it's super forgettable. I have three names. There are three names that I think it might be. Okay, first one, Chris with a K. No. No. Okay. It's not Chris with a K. What's the other one? Is it? Is it Ryan? No, it's not. Was it Ryan? Not Ryan. Okay. Looks like a Danny. But no, no, Daddy is Danny's there. They're a little they're a little smarter. You know, they're a little smarter, a little not as well built, I think. But they're much more passionate, more giving. And then lastly, Chris with a ch. To your guesses are Chris. Is it any three of those? So the actor's name is Alex. Alex pettyfer. I think why it's so confusing is because the character's name is Adam. So basically confusing because it's named natum. It's confusing because it's a totally forgettable name and a totally forgettable care. And they call him the kid all the touches why that scene works so well. Especially given we're going to talk about later I don't want to talk about here's a huge problem. Here's like, hey, Matthew McConaughey is working him like a like a doll. basically like a rag. I mean, what what I love about McCartney's performances. Yeah, you're saying he's captivating and he demands all the attention whenever he speaking. Essentially, he can't kind of sucks up all the energy and that is true. But what I think is interesting is a how duplicitous and then how much of how much of a liar he is like you he can put on that fake persona of his jovial guy. I mean, another scene that I really liked was when the the house party he had and he was saying, oh, we're going to go to Miami. And he was congratulating everybody and doing all these little gestures with them to say, Hey, I see you, you know, we're together, but at the same time, they are all so fucking fake. And what's so great is makhana hay delivers it in a way that it's like if you knew the real Dallas, you know how fake it is. But it's also something where, if you were that person in that moment, you might be convinced by that charm because he is so charismatic. And I just think that that's such a great two sided performance to me. I think that's really interesting, but also what his character represents, you know, going off that scene as well. The fact that McConaughey has these paintings of himself these busts and sculptures of himself and how vain he is, just is such an interesting character trait, particularly when I was doing some research on this movie. And none of that was there. McConaughey added almost everything to that role from his personal collection was just like, Oh, right, man. Now just hold on. I'll go back to my paintings. I just, I just want the character traits. fucking moron. He has all these failings and busts of himself. That is I'll just finish this up with saying that I disagree with you. On the overall performances. I think Channing Tatum at times had some issues. But overall, I thought he was pretty solid. Not like Oscar winner, not an Oscar contender. Not his best performance. A definitely a very subdued and interesting and different performance for him that I think worked really well. I think everyone did really well. I think the sister with what's her name? Oh, her name is bro. Brooke. She was good. She She was not she was not she was she was different. I mean, the thing is this is Eric bass like model fluff doing like bozo shit though. She wasn't good. It was like her and Olivia is a very we're probably has just the acting approach and style of the film which is very Matter of fact and laid back and observational, which is very different than white color. You know, you like you like something that's more staged that pretends to be more real. This I would call this staged and pretending to be real and then failing to do so that's how I view this. This film. I'm fairly improv by the way. So I which is also probably why it doesn't come off as totally believable because they're not It's why I find advisors. Channing Tatum is not a good improviser. The sister wasn't a good improviser fluff anyways, about a second like you want to say a second like you moron, your current. The obese Hispanic comedian, the fluffy one. I don't remember. remember his name. He was probably the best performance after Matthew McConaughey. Anyways, my next like, probably going to be the dance choreography. Um, yeah, it's really you know, if you didn't know these were all professional actors. You think? Yeah, these guys are professional strippers. Not that it's necessarily the most difficult skill in the world to learn or master. But it's a process and try. I want to see you try. Hey, Alex pettyfer could become as big of a deal as he was. According to Matthew McConaughey his character in less than three months. I think I'd be able to do it, I think and I could get the reputation he gets after starting where he does, which is just taking his clothing off and then dry humping a girl in the audience. I willing to bet on my chances. Anyways, I wasn't particularly in prep what's particularly most impressive. To say, hey, Shawn, tell me Did he choreograph his own dances? Did you look that up? I did. Channing choreographed that one dance. He did the end but everything else is choreographed for him. But I just want to finish my point. That's very impressive. Yeah. people throw coins at you to get you off the stage. They throw coins and rocks. You're just repeating but you're repeating my joke for murder earlier where I joked about you being paid to stop stripping in your theater. That's just lazy. You're just stealing my joke. No, it's a different joke. I'm saying people have arthritis know that. You still payment? That's still payment that is redeemable but there's a different stage there. I can use a towel or goggle rice. However, I will say there's a back side to this compliment. And that there are way too many stripteases in this film just way too many. They all are pretty well choreographed. But the thing is just like it's overflowing with them there probably needed to be like maybe 10 or 15 minutes less of stripteases because you have like, I don't know maybe four or five minutes sequences throughout and then like a couple of montages that include another like a minute minute and a half of stripping in We get the point. There's a lot of stripping in the first half hour, then there's a lot of it in the in the second act, and then a lot of it at the end. And it's just unnecessary. The amount that goes into it. It's believable. But it doesn't need to be there. And frankly, it can't I'm every time I got to a new one. After the halfway point, I was just like, Okay, I get the point they rehearsed, it's very believable. Can we get back to the plot? I agree. I there definitely was a point where I mean, honestly, I didn't, I thought that the strip scenes were well done. I just never really cared to be watching it. And I thought the rest of the movie was far more interesting. So personally, I I have I go. I agree with you Jani, that if it got cut in half or something, I think it would flow better and work better as a movie. That being said, I totally understand why it's there. Because for the intended audience, they want to the theater and for that, so it's understandable that it's there. I mean, it gets them their money's worth, but it does not it damages it personally. I think it damages it as a film it gets it sure gets like the demographic model that is worth but it hurts the experience. Not dramatically, but a little bit. I think Trump dramatically and aesthetically I think it does. So what's your second like, Okay, this is not like fucking godfather Kota, or Francis Ford Coppola just cuts off 10 minutes and said, this is a better movie, right? If you cut off 10 minutes of the stripping, it's not like, Oh, Jesus Christ. I didn't realize this was a brilliant movie before. But yeah, because you cut some of it. I know, watch the extended versions of The Hobbit. And you'll be like, yeah, there's some stuff they definitely needed to cut out of this, that it did not need to be here, as opposed to the extended versions of the Lord of the Rings, which are better, they just needed to cut two movies is what they needed, and just have the one movie but that's neither here nor there. Not not arguing that point. But you're kind of agreeing with me that sometimes cutting a substantial amount of unnecessary fat does and is dramatically piece of art that it does look good. I surely proportionally I think cutting off like 10 minutes of stripping from this movie would be the same as cutting off an entire movie, or maybe a little less than an entire movie. Let's say like 80 minutes from the hobbit on a grand on the extended hobbit? Yes. First standard hobbits because they're such shit in the first place. I wouldn't want to Well, that's really surprising. You seem like the kind of person who would like that stuff. What's your second point? My second point says, Magic Mike above returning the king. Okay, well, we also know that I'm carrying with to score I just wanna I just want to enjoy a surprise. My second point that I want to make that I really like, I found the world building, essentially the worldbuilding of the stripper seen to be really fascinating. So basically all the stripper life outside the stripping. So I'm talking about behind the scenes when they're preparing for this show, when they're talking about their rituals and stuff, or when they're going to that island selling drugs. I can't really hear you right now because I'm talking myself or when they go to that island and party and celebrate sandbar when they go and buy clothing for Alex Adam, the kid, whatever. When Channing Tatum is flattening his bills, all those little details, I found really interesting and more so good. I like his loan request is getting rejected because he has an awful credit score. I'm gonna get into that later because that was fucking stupid. But I like the meticulous details. And I know a lot of that is because Channing Tatum lived that life and was able to add that, but a movie is always better for that it I'm going to get into this later. But that authenticity to whatever wife it's trying to portray, I mean, even bringing this back to the Lord of the Rings that we were just talking about what people love about the Lord of the Rings is that role building those that attention to detail. Now, obviously this is far does not go to that extent, because this is far more in the real world and does not need to add fantasy. But the point is, we immerse ourselves in these worlds and when we go to the movies, we want to see these details as opposed to generic crap. I don't know like the full monty that doesn't really even understand what stripping is. But because it's not trying to talk about stripping, it's not it is not trying to strip this film doesn't really explore all I wanted To say earlier, we watched two male stripping movies and this is by far the better one. Anyways, Rog no Full Monty by far the better I'm far superior both films but yeah no you're right it is it is the Full Monty is better by far thank you for finally Oh, I didn't say that. Get your guy said. So, no, no, I didn't say that. My Magic Mike is by far the better stripping movie. How are we arguing about this anyway? Because I write and you're just in tears. You know? What's my boy? You know what I want to do? Yachty I want to go like when COVID is all over? I want to go see you. I want to go to a bar and then debate with you very loudly. What is the better male stripper ribbeck movie as I just see what what the reaction of the crowd is? We should do it. We should do it at a lesbian bar. So we can be like really confusing. I think that Oh, why would we ever? Why? Yeah, there's just so many questions like, everybody, there's gonna be like, Okay. Well, I mean, watch like a gay bar. That would make sense. Like we went to Rainey street in Austin. It would make sense that wasn't my point. I want I know not make sense. I think we should go to an Irish Pub. I think that's the best place to do it. Irish lesbian pub. What kind of Irish lesbian? Have you ever seen an Irish lesbian pub? Does that exist? listeners? Right? It has to make your opinion. A cast@gmail.com do you know in Ireland a lesbian willing to bet you Irish $100 there was a there was a lesbian Irish pub in Dublin. Have you been Ireland? Have you seen any Irish pubs in Ireland? No, but there are going to obviously going to be lesbians in Ireland. I mean they're not just on the island of Lesbos. Okay listeners write in let us know where the top spots for those Irish hops are. Anyway the worldbuilding I really enjoyed it I I like that attention to detail and expanding upon our perception because the stripping is something that's obvious the behind the scenes is not in the the work in the detail that gets that they have to work on to bring their acts into fruition. It's just interesting. Yani what's your next thing Third thing can't deny it can't take it away from him. Steven Soderbergh. he's a he's a damn fine cinematographer. I don't I someone also told me that he edits his films too. That's correct. Yeah. Here's the interesting thing about the Soderbergh cuz the thing is, I'm a, I'm a big fan of Soderbergh, he is probably Soderbergh or most he's one of my favorite directors, definitely my top five, maybe like top three? I don't know. But so he sometimes is his own cinematographer. Sometimes he's not he's not. He is in this case, I think is a better cinematographer than he is a director. But he edits all his stuff, and he edits all his stuff as he shooting. So he'll direct that day at night and have everything edited. So if they need to make any adjustments for the next day, they will do so this guy is such a workaholic, he, you know, I I know a point you're going to say or insinuate is that he doesn't always know the problem something but I think his experimentation and also i don't i want to get back to your point. But I was listening to an interview for this movie. So 2012 and he basically predicted and forecasted the moment we are in right now. About p VOD, and streaming and all that stuff. Eight years ago, he was so on it. He's such a smart motherfucker. And yeah, I just I I'm in awe of his brain and his abilities and everything he's able to achieve, but I'll let you speak more to it. Yeah. So, you know, basically, if we're talking about cinematography, you're talking about a couple of elements. You're talking about lighting, you're talking about movies on sand, you're talking about movement, and every single frame of this film is so well crafted. And it could have been really easy. I know Shawn probably wants to dog on the way the striptease at the end of full monty was filmed. But it's really important. It was really important that the way those stripteases were filmed, were done. It was done in an energetic and very, like alluring way it had to be done correctly or else it could have just come off as boring or somebody that was at least problems with that movie to make that mistake to make that mistake. And all of those every time a striptease occurs even though I think it's excessive. It's very well shot and very well edited together. There's just this energy that runs through it constantly and then when you're not when we're not there, all His exteriors is daylight things his I mean, well, daylight, I think I'm really mentioning specifically because the majority I think of the plot outside of the stripping outside of the strip club occurs during the day, despite being very over color graded. Like we're talking, Breaking Bad. Mexico setting yellow Breaking Bad, it does have some problems. You're saying with the color grading in Mexico? I'm never crazy about it sometimes. Well, I'm sorry. It's it's here there. But you know what I'm talking about, you know how yellow they make Mexico look, and he makes Tampa looks like look like it's Ecuador. I don't know. If it works. Looks like right, you know that no mower in the world actually looks like that. It's Yes, I know. Right? That I just want to confirm Ecuador is yes, but the color grading is very distracting is what I'm trying to get at, despite how well the camera moves, despite how well the characters are framed in their discussions and their interactions, whether they're just moving, whether they're for instance, just pulling up in a new truck outside of the sister's house. Everything is kinetic, you know, even if the frame is still there's movement in it, there's movement within it and it is never boring, the images never uninteresting. And you know, that's that's a lot easier to mess up than most people would think. So all right. Cheers. Cheers to two to Soderbergh or for cinematography and editing. I honestly think he's a better cinematographer than he is a director in this one, I think, I think is he's a great he's great at everything. But I want to say you know what, annoys me so much about you what it takes the Favorites category, and it's like a Trojan horse. You always find a way to take one of the favorites. So bad cat in amateur con, add an extra I'm not crazy about this one. I'm finding things to like about it every time. One of the interesting what you you left a little fun fact on the outline. Do you want to say what the fun fact was? I wanted to continue to talk about the what we were talking about but you say the fun fact because I know you want you want to get here's the fun fact say Shawn left a fun fact something I didn't know about Channing Tatum originally wanted Nicolas Winding refn to direct the film but Revin had to turn it down because he had scheduling conflicts with only God forgives that no absolutely not fuck it. Oh my god forgive I want to do for this podcast. I would love to do it for the next episode, but we already have the next one in line. I'm literally one compliment. I would have loved to see Magic Mike directed by winning Griffin but shot by Soderbergh shot and edited by Soderbergh. I think that would have been really interesting. Listen, I'll watch anything Soderbergh totally behind that, or interesting. Another thing I wanted to say earlier, I feel like I forgot one point that I wanted to make. But you were saying that Soderbergh is really good at essentially staging his camera in his shot, and having movement within it. And what I love so much about his work, and you know, speaking earlier as to why I hated Ocean's eight, so much and why he needed Soderbergh is because he has such a great and unique talent, to really just let the camera sit in one shot, not really move around, but let movement take place within the frame. That's really interesting and fascinating. But then he throws a pan and he'll throw like a pan or tilt hills. totally unexpected, but it's great. Yeah, it was he doesn't do it all the time. But when he does, it works really well. And like with the the stripping scenes, what I found really interesting was that in a typical hollywood movie, and I also, I haven't seen the sequel, but I watched a trailer for it. And what it seems to be in the sequel, there's a lot of movement, a lot of dollying, handheld, whatever they do, where this movie, even though it's kinetic with its stripping scenes, I don't feel like the camera actually moves a lot. It's mostly static for what I remember. So it's really interesting to have that energy. But at the same time, the camera has cameras still observational, it's still they're not really going along with it. I mean, it is to a degree but not to the extent that a lot of other dance oriented scenes are gonna have, you know, this is not High School Musical. So I thought that was really an interesting approach that I really appreciate it and liked. Well, a big part of that too, is framing and lighting, you know, yes. Now I know. Especially especially with the dances but like outside too. It's so easy to mess up. what's supposed to look like natural daylight. So easy to make what's natural look Completely unnatural and I think you know, correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't Soderbergh does any advocate for a lot of natural lighting? Yeah, he's all about that fucking natural light. I mean, he'll, he'll often like to shoot with, like big windows like in high rises or something and just have that light flood in and he'll shoot it in such a beautiful way. He I'm just thinking about some other scenes and some other movies. He's fantastic. I I truly love Soderbergh. Again. One of my favorites, okay, what's your last favorite? And then we get to my favorite part, which is the least favorite parts. Before we get into my last round. It's going to be real quick. You have to go to the bathroom, of course, and delivery machine, constantly having to piss yourself, why don't you just get a catheter, but I took my tammo so I gotta pee. He said tammo what he's referring to is the prescription drug tamsulosin. The generic version of flomax, which is the medication we both use to appeal your rate. Our promise to Titus Fun fact not that we share the promise to Titus but we both have it. Oh, you back, you don't wetting yourself. If I was wetting myself, don't you think I could just do it in my pants where I sat? Why would I? Why would I get up walk to the bathroom and then choose to wet myself? Well, I imagine you have some sort of like collection tray that you stand over. So like you urinate, then you get your underwear nice and damp. And then you squeeze it out into the collection tray and then you store it with all the other putrefying urine. It doesn't that doesn't make any sense. Why would anyone do that? Well, you use it to make what what happens is you take it you store it. And then you, you you let it ferment on my own. If you're in ferments, but yes, you you use it to get high later months from now. So you're saying I get high on my own urine? It's cheaper than ecstasy. Also, why ish? But why would I pee and then do an extra little bit? Why wouldn't I just use the entire amount of urine that doesn't? I don't get you. You're like get it? I don't know. You're a weird guy. You like getting it on your hands? What do you want? It's impractical, even if even if that hype but yeah, you're a highly weird fucking hypothetical of me, sniffing up my own pass to get high. Why wouldn't I just use all the PIs? And why would I just drink more often? Why wouldn't I just be peeing all the fucking time? So I can get as much peace as possible. I just don't understand why 127 hours, you can drink it three times. I'm not saying I can't drink it. I'm just wondering why I would waste any of it by peeing into a toilet. If that were what I was going to do. So now we're on to the least favorite aspects of film shot. Do you want to go first or do you want me to start? No, I'm still talking about my likes. We didn't get to my last like, Oh, my gosh, hurry up. All right, Lauer's. We are at an hour. All right, I don't give a fuck. Alright, listeners. So last week, I don't know if you remember. But I chastise Johnny for a reading off of something as he got really emotional, about his like, for passion and passion of honor, don't really care. Anyways, point is, I did a little front and back paper of my feelings and thoughts in this movie and what I liked about it, so I'll try my best to stick to it. Obviously, I'm not going to be as I'm not as well articulated as Jani, and I'm not, it's not going to sound as authentic words no as pretty. Anyways, what I liked about this film, is the theme of superficial reality versus authenticity, because is constantly contrasting and going back and forth. And I thought that was super interesting. So here's what I said. The film is observational and pulls back the curtain on male strippers and something that on the surface looks glamorous. It's the contrast and push and pull between superficial reality and authenticity. That's what I keep going back to everything in this film is one or the other. You have the superficial glitz of the stripping, the ladies that are loving and having a fun time with it. But you also pull back the curtain and see the authentic world behind it as they prepare themselves, you know, using a penis pump, their little family gathering before, all that kind of stuff. Also with superfish Challis, you know like Olivia man's character, who is you know, seems to be like a potential deceitful, just flat out deceitful, deceitful, but like potential love interest at first but the more we will Learn about her, the more we've learned. She's just, she's just a fuck buddy at the end of the day. And while Channing wants to turn that into something more, I mean, there's a scene later on that I really loved, where he's asking her all these questions about herself, and what she's doing. And she says, What's with all these questions, and this is after they just had sex, too. So it's clear that she's not there to talk to him, she doesn't really care what's going on with him. And she doesn't really want to have any kind of meaningful relationship with him. On the other hand, you contrast that with Brooke, who is the kids sister, she doesn't really care for the stripping, she doesn't care for Mike in that way, particularly at first, I mean, they, at the very end, they start to have a relationship, but really, it's platonic, for the majority of the movie. And it's, it's that more authentic relationship in terms of how they're speaking to each other, they're learning more about each other, and just being honest and open and real with each other. So just going between that glitz and glam to that authenticity. And for Mike, what he is looking to do, and what he's looking for, I thought was very interesting. And another moment that I thought really stood out was, you know, with the drugs and everything. And the third act, that again, goes to that superficial nature and you know, everything seems fine and light to a degree a but you can still see behind the cracks during the montage. But the very end, when they get to the editing technique, I thought was really interesting, or an editing bit. When Soderbergh is continuing that pop song that's going throughout that scene, up until we get to the kid who is on the floor and his own vomit, which is a really disturbing image, we're still playing the song on that shot, and it kind of hard cuts on that shot. So it's that contrast that push and pull and seeing Mike and that character, figure out his way and what he wants to do in the world, as well as going with that authenticity, being his true self and what he wants to do as far as his own business and creating a different life for himself. I, I just thought was awesome. Also, Dallas, like we were talking about before, Dallas is superfish reality both and how he approaches people, but also how he views himself. Those paintings and those portraits and all that stuff that he has of himself is superficial. It's something where when I was reflecting going back on this, I was realizing, with this authenticity, Mike is looking for while you know, to a degree because he wants to, you know, make furniture, he's still looking for what his true self is, what his authentic self is, where I think Dallas still doesn't even know what his authentic self is what who he wants to be. He has this portrait this picture that is in itself a lie. He's lying to himself. I don't even think he knows his true self. So until he he's that sexy? I don't think you I don't think that's all I'm saying internally. Because when all that goes when you know, in 10 years, 20 years, however, when that fades away, what is he going to be then? And Mike is going through this reconciliation at the end of the movie, when he loses all his money, he has to give it up as basically his way of it's like a trial, you know, he has to give everything up in order to get out of this world. Essentially, it's the tax he has to pay. And he pretty well, you pretty willingly pays for it. I mean, at the end when Brooke is talking about the money he's like, I don't even even though I don't think the line reading from Channing Tatum was great that when he says I didn't come for the money, I'm not talking about the money, I don't care. He doesn't care about the money. He doesn't care about what he or essentially earned from the stripping because none of that matters to him. He realized even though he's making money from it, and he's doing well, it doesn't it's not what's important. What's important is forging a relationship with her as well as figuring out himself in his life and just being more honest and real with himself. I thought that was all great. Also, little is also seeing Alex Adam, wherever you want to call him that killed him falling into that superfish alley and not understanding it. So the scene when he's with Matt bomer, his wife at the party, Matthew McConaughey, his party, and he's just obsessing over Matt bomer his wife's breasts and he's like, you want to touch him. It's just again, like a representation of that superficial reality or That drugs are all this stuff. I just think there's a lot real Shawn here. There's nothing superficial there. Remember, he Matt bomer said they're real. She said they're real. There's some realness going on in that scene. It's, it's, you know what I mean? You know, you fucking liar. For a long time now, if I were you, I'd be doing, I'd be snoring, I'd be doing that storing thing. But you know what, I lower my heart out for the love of this movie. Which is, here's the thing, you do this shit all the fucking time. And I literally zone out and stop paying attention. Because you just say asinine shit. That's not even in the movie, that you just kind of do my own thing. But I'm more respectful than you. I'm a more respectful human. So Oh, my God. So to talk about my least one of my least favorite aspects, is to actually talk about what Shawn just mentioned, and what he's talking about this theme of superficiality versus authenticity, it's definitely there. But and and I'll say it's significant. And it's important, and it's one of the redeeming values in this film is that it takes a clear stand against what it believes is right and wrong, but it's lost in the excesses. It's lost in the performances. It's lost by one dimensional characters. And this kind of facile treatment of it's more cautionary aspect. There's no ambiguity for the viewer for the main character to navigate. And for that reason, it it's entirely one sided. Not that I don't think this argument isn't one sided. I think it's entirely one sided. But you have to give your character a little more to struggle through and when all that's happening around him are people getting drunk people overdosing people being undervalued, as human beings. People being attacked his apartment getting ripped apart by drug dealers, you know, his so called friend overdosing on his carpet, all these things like the people he likes distancing themselves from him. There's really no ambiguity there. And it seems entirely obvious what route the main character is supposed to take. Obviously, he needs to get himself out of that. You know, what, from the very first half hour, maybe not the first half hour because they do try to dress up the whole situation a little more, maybe by about the halfway point, you know, he shouldn't be in this world. Nobody should be in this world. And so for that reason, yeah, he he gets out. But that's so obvious. It's such an obvious point. And I would have loved to see a little more of the strippers motivations for staying in that world. Like for, like downs, for instance. I know you like him. I mean, it's totally there. No, I know you like Dallas, and you're saying that he hasn't. I was gonna talk about Adam. I mean, that last one of them. I hear you saying he hasn't figured out who he is as a person. I don't think that the screenplay thought to give him some sort of depth. The the there was really no depth to him. He was just that obvious foil to the lifestyle that Channing Tatum wants adding there's depth that is subsumed into that world. And yeah, you get this sense of what he wants. But it's this really like petulant desire to have money and girls and all these very superficial things. And there isn't this sort of finality to his character, the end because keep in mind, his I'm assuming now ex best friend is going to start dating his sister. The interaction doesn't end there. Whatever tragedy lies ahead for him is going to be a part of Channing Tatum's life, whether anyone likes it or not. And the movie kind of just treats it like they're now divorced. They're kind of like totally apart from each other. There's, this is going to be a happy ending. And yeah, Channing Tatum, he wants to make custom furniture the whole time. In fact, every time he talks about who he is, as a person, that's all we hear about. He wants to make custom furniture. It isn't until about the hour 20 Are you telling me writing has annoying a shit about it, where we get anywhere past anywhere deeper than the custom furniture. Really, it takes that long, every single interaction where he's talking about, he's either talking with Brooke or he's trying to get loans for the Custom Furniture business. It's just custom furniture. Maybe we learn he has bad credit. Maybe we learned he's having some. Maybe we learned he's good with his money, but we don't really learn a lot about him. And in a movie, sorry, in a film that's all about talking trash about superficial reality or trying to help people rise up out of it. It's a little counterproductive for your efforts to also be a little superficial. And that is all also indicated by the fact the the verb the veracity of that is all indicated by the fact that there was a strong enough demand to justify a sequel that totally flips the script on the original okay. There's a lot user said. Listen, I disagree with that. The movies, movies being superficial towards Mike, I disagree. I mean, that the characters are one no and whatnot. I forgot everything you just said. And I'm going to hate myself when going back and wanting to make a counterpoint when I haven't. But needless to say, I disagree with the majority of what you said, I will agree that it's really aggravating that they made and this is a later point, but that they made a sequel that we haven't seen, it seems to completely contradict the point of this movie. And the morals of as you see it, he goes back to stripping, he goes back to stripping the fact that he does that. It's nice to know. Yeah, it shouldn't. I mean, I would say what you're saying, I can't remember the exact thing you said. But you're essentially saying that this movie, kind of glamorizes that lifestyle to a degree and you wish it was more of a fairy tale in the beginning, it's glamorize because it has to be glamorized for the while, at the time, the duel, the second protagonist, the kid to become enticed into it to become enticed by it and to join it. It has to be glamorized. It's not glamorized throughout the rest of the runtime. That's not what I was saying. What I would just really want to make note of is what I really like about Soderbergh's approach is, it's very observational, it's what it takes stances, yes, and the themes and everything. It's not necessarily trying to say, this is clearly the wrong path. This is evil. And this other path is truly amazing. And then the best, I think most of us are going to follow and want what Mike chooses, as opposed to Dallas and the kid. But that being said, I don't think it becomes I don't think the movie 100% treats it as the something like a gangster movie what Yeah, but you're not the way that these scenes are contrived. The movie doesn't make you want to like Dallas, because they're moving to Miami, wherever they're moving to. Where is it? It's Miami, isn't it? It's Miami. Yes, it doesn't they don't make you want to like him because he's an entrepreneur because he's good at making they don't make you want to like Olivia Munn for having a fiance and then having these random sexual encounters with people like Mike and other women. It takes a stance it they don't make you want to like the kids decision in the end to stick with the stripping. None of these things the viewer is supposed to like, and it's very clear that they're not supposed to like it. So even if they're not coming out and saying like, hey, the world of stripping is an evil thing. In so obvious terms. I think it's pretty clear sure that it is not in favor of that superficial lifestyle. I agree. I just don't think it's not healthy for anyone. I don't think it's one dimensional. I think I think Mike is flushed out in the degree we need him to be and the majority of the supporting. It's flushed out in Sure. A different way. That's a typical to what you'd expect from a typical Hollywood drama or something. But I really liked the approach and I found it very refreshing. Anyways, I want to move on to my dislike, which you kind of mentioned earlier, I wrote Mike's credit score. This really pissed me off. This is really weird. really annoying. My note was why did they have to drag Maria into this one? Now Marie from breaking bad? I knew as soon as Brandt showed up, you're going to say something about it. Now that is you're probably the highlight of the movie for you wasn't it? Yeah, she's she's probably the most attractive lady in the whole movie. Yeah. I see. I loved Olivia mana I forgot how much yeah, I note about the movie gives you Olivia months breasts as a means of compensating every straight man in the crowd for their time. Yeah, it was pretty great. Anyways, back to the credit score. This annoyed me i a little side note, on my end. During this pandemic, I've been watching a lot of financial education videos and kind of teaching myself about that kind of stuff. Trying to become Dallas. Yeah, point at no point is mad buddy, Jim Cramer. The point is having a Mike has apparently essentially in the scene. Mike has a shitty credit score, but he tries to compensate for that in getting a loan by having a lot of money like half half down on the loan or something or to get the rest and he's trying to finagle his way to essentially get this loan. And Betsy brands like well, you have a I'm sorry, there's my hands are tied. You have such a terrible credit score. There's nothing I can do. And I'm just saying myself, Mike, it's not that hard to get an okay credit score, especially when you say oh, I he says to her Well, my business only deals in cash. So I can't really do anything about it. I'm sorry, Mike. Just get a fucking credit card. What I I don't you don't Hadn't need to buy something that expensive and then pay it off immediately. Exactly. It just get your groceries, just your groceries, pay it off gas. Yeah, drive a car, put it put it in the bank, you don't need to put a ton in the bank just enough. It's really not hard. And considering that you want to be a business man, I think you would know how to have an okay credit or manage several businesses. To me it says either it's a preposterous scene. Yeah, it's and then he's like caddy with her the whole time to make makes this really offhand comment about her judging him based on some numbers on a page or some words on a page. I something there to beg for No, he's there to buy like he's there to beg for money. No, you don't get to be catty with your loan officer. This isn't a loan officer that the official title. I think technically, that's what they are. Yeah, that would be her title in that position. Yeah. Anyways. Oh, yeah. I agree. That was point is, I just I that really took me out, especially for a movie that is, like I've mentioned before striving for the authenticity of the world that's creating, to have Mike have that oversight is ludicrous. To me. I think there's got to be a better reason than he has a bad credit score, or at least clarify why he has a bad credit score. If he's going to be a businessman again, he should know he should have an idea. God, yes. What's your second this lie? Here's my second one is one that we share. This is more overlap. And it's Chris at Alex, Adam, Adam, the kid. He's absent for like most of the second act. He's introduced as in this kind of dual protagonist position, parallel to Mike and then from like, minute 35 to an hour in or something like that. He is not in the he has nothing to do with the plot. He's maybe with Channing Tatum, but there was no way the film doesn't follow him. We don't see any sort of progression in his abilities as a stripper. It's like nothing. And as soon as it's like, as soon as the film realizes, oh, crap, we haven't done anything with this guy for like, half an hour. What should we do? like okay, have fluffy, sell him some ecstasy? And then he becomes a drug dealer? Yeah, it just seems it's kind of lazy. It's it's probably my biggest problem with with the script is that the kid just has nothing to do. And then they fumbled to find him something that is kind of on the nose in terms of the the film's theme, I don't think his lazy eye, when he comes back with the drugs, I actually thought that was maybe not the greatest of storylines, but I thought that was interesting and appropriate for the film. And I particularly thought his last scene where he's like, I have all this freedom to do or whatever I want. Or in reality, he's trapped in this box that he has created for himself. I thought it was really interesting. That being said, they could have showed us that development early on, but but I agree with you structurally, it's just weird how essentially, he's the lead character in the first 20 minutes where Mike is the supporting character. You know, the, the if one if Alex is the guy who is being introduced this world and Mike is the veteran. So normally that's the more supporting role, then kind of gets reversed in the middle and yeah, we lose Alex. And it just weird where the priorities kind of land. I thought that was something where again, because Soderbergh likes to experiment in Edit, I figured something where they shot a little more than they needed. And that was something where he when he was crafting the film, he said, Oh, I actually want to focus more on Mike as opposed to Alex so not necessarily a script thing, but more of an editing thing with Ray one focus, but I was just reading on IMDB before this, that Channing Tatum and Alex, whatever the fuck his last name is feuded on set that have never we're not on agreeable terms. So it makes sense that he was either cut out a bit or he just couldn't continue shooting. So Soderbergh had to rearrange some things and change where the film was headed. I don't know which is the case, but it makes sense. That being said, like Jani said before, it does hurt the film. And it is kind of I think, personally, the biggest reason why earlier, I was hesitant to give it anything above and eight, because while I think this movie does a lot really well. This is Unlike having to a little bit too much stripping, this actually is an impediment on the film, I will agree to your point that it's an impediment on the film. I like that we rarely want to agree with each additional, we're just barely, ya know, anyone who watches this, it should be obvious, they could have handled the kid a little bit better in the first half. My last thing on the second half, but you know, I've kind of just been alluding to this the whole time. I think that for how long this movie is, we have a very small amount of plot up until the third act, I was keeping track and like actual events that affected the characters lives, and the relation the meaningful relationships they make, or just the relationships in general rather, I should just say relationships in general, that maybe accounts for like 30 minutes of the first hour and 20 minutes of this of this film. And then the third act is entirely plot almost entirely. But that gives you this like total of maybe 45 to 55 minutes of action, which is half the runtime half of this runtime is actual plot I wrote 40 minutes on the outline, I was exaggerating, but only half of this story actually affects is actually affected or affects the characters within and it kind of frustrates me because there is so much stripping, there is so much partying there is so much. And like in some of the partying scenes, you do have like shots of the characters, you see their faces, you see their emotions, you see them, like kind of becoming unglued. And maybe you can count that as like character development or just development, or like one part of an arc, but not a lot happens in the first one first hour and 20 minutes. And it's frustrating. Very frustrating. Yeah, I know. Shawn disagrees. You know what's really frustrating to me, you know, what's insanely frustrating and just truly infuriating to me, is how we're gonna make a point about passion and how much of a hypocrite you are. Because the majority of the fun sorry, movies you pick are like plot what's a plot fuck that we're just gonna have characters wander around. So thank you and jack. Here's the thing. Here's the thing I'd say for what it is passion Ivana, for instance, does have more of a plot the Magic Mike no Magic Mike is a film of a standard event propelled three act structure. It has limited interest even it has limited interest in exploring characters, or character psychology, there are two very different films exploring two very different topics with two very different methodologies. My additional route, traditional route, and it fails and doing so I think it does just fine with its plot. I think your problem The plot is more of the point we just made where it kind of goes back and forth on what it wants to talk about. I'm fine with the scenes where it's, again, more observational, not really about too much. I don't think just having to real plot heavy stuff. I was fine with those scenes. I liked a lot of those scenes. Because again, usually it's setting up the world or setting up the character more so than anything else. But you know, whatever more your hypocritical funnel that's not running about character this this film doesn't care terribly much about character psychology. And that kind of goes back to my point about self a lot of the characters being incredibly one dimensional hard disagree. I haven't you know, you can hate on passion Ivana all you want. But it's entirely it's an entirely psychological film. It cares principally about characters. And for that reason, the plot is built around the character psychology, this film cares a little bit less, not a little bit substantially less about the psychology of all of its characters because it has well one it has more of them. But two, it's trying to do a little bit more with the plot. And so you have to make adjustments you do you have to make adjustments with with with the materials you're working with. I did okay, I want to I want to finish this up. So last thing I'll just say with that is listeners. I'm sure you're listening go Oh, passion of Anna, I've never heard of that. Should I go back and listen to that episode. You don't need to you should you definitely shouldn't In fact, go back and listen to the Full Monty. The episode tell us a better film about an episode. Basically. Don't listen to other episodes and don't pick any of Sean's you don't need to listen to any so final thoughts. No, I didn't. I didn't say the last thing that I disliked. Last thing I disliked was not enough Matt bomer because Matt bomer is a fantastic actor. I really liked him and white color and a lot of other things. So it's really frustrating when you have you know one of these teams Be actors that gets put in a side character role that has almost nothing to do I was fresh we have that manager mellow guy the man Jia mellow monchi the guy hit two hour so I put him but he represents basically all those side guys that are there but had almost no lines and nothing to do anyways final final thought your final Shawn just summarize the entire film you have a gun a bunch of guys in the background with some lines but nothing to do that's a lot of this now now that's if you want to watch if you want to watch some pretty boys dance for about a third of the runtime you know you don't have to buy a ticket to this one it's on HBO max just try to pay more attention to whatever plot you can find between those strip sequences because that's the point not the stripping. Yes, there is a plot and that is the point. Oh my god, you're a fucking moron. So why do we want there's a why what's your rating? What's your runway watching next week now what's your rating? Give us a rating let's see. Give this a rating no decimals or not. No no, no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no. I've been thinking about it the whole time. No no, I'm the guest I'm I am allowed some liberties I am given oh my god just ladies who are listening to this episode on haven't listened to other episodes shows every fucking time. He says oh I don't know our decimals. decimals told us Did you say did you say ladies or listeners use ladies cuz I'm assuming all the listeners who are going to be listening to this specific episode are first time listeners. And ladies. You heard that you heard that listeners. He's sexist. Not only is he wrong, he's a sexist new Yes. assumption with a decimal point. based off of the frequent voice out of the movie theater. When I it's better than we do at work at AMC. I got an audience. Wait, can you say that again? It feels too high. 6.2 that feels too high. I said it. It feels wrong. I'm redacting it 5.7 it could be worse. It has a good point it tries to make kinda falters making it. You want to know what we're gonna watch next week? How do you feel that Magic Mike has made so much more money than passion of Anna? How do you feel knowing that Passion of the Christ has made so much more money than magic? Mike? I'm fine with it. Okay. Well, the next thing we're gonna watch somewhere there then yeah. It's also a film about performance. And it's it's a bit of a bit of a black horse for me, because I don't normally like documentaries. But I watched this a few months ago, months ago, and I absolutely loved it. It's one of the criteria in channel. Shawn, why don't you Why don't you get out your sweat bait? Oh, I should also say this is going to tie into my choice for number 10 for this series, because I get to choose the movies that we love movie or movies that we love. So number 10 lists are set to clarify, because this is Episode 28. And next one is going to be 29, nine and 10 of whatever 10 Films we do. The chooser gets to pick nine as well as 10. But 10 is going to be a movie that we both actually like. So yummy. Yeah. So number nine is the recent documentary, john McEnroe in the realm of perfection, about john McEnroe's, nearly perfect 1984 run. And you might recognize you if you understood French, you might recognize the the narrator because he's a he played john Dominic Bobby in diving bell and the butterfly. You can't choose that IRA. I already watched it. And I love it. I think it's a great. It's a great document. All right. Well, then I'm excited. We'll have a lot to talk about. Enjoy watching tennis. for two hours. He called my bluff guys he called my bluff. what what what's the one we actually gonna like? Oh, I don't like I don't get to announce that. Do I? Do I get to that on my eight? Oh, number 10. Number 10. So we've kind of cheated. We're watching two movies not related that what they're kind of spiritual successors. One's a spiritual successor to the other. The first one is the tennis, mockumentary seven days in hell. And the second one is a successor tour to pharmacy so I think we're gonna have a lot of fun with those but first, I'm gonna make you scream. You're gonna make me scream gonna make you scream. Just like just like one of those ladies in the crowd. Watching magic that's a good stressed himself a enjoy that you're saying. I'm gonna say I'm gonna watch this fucking tennis documentary and scream over. Like I'm lusting over. I have made it a tangible Connor. You're cool. Makes tennis look real cool. I'll tell you what. He's no Matthew McConaughey. But john McEnroe, you can hit that ball real nice. I don't think it's possible to make tennis look cool. And I seriously doubt this is cool. Get out of here. Is this a French film? Yes. It's, it's also in French imagine, not only is tennis not cool, but you add French into it and it's just dramatically less cool and more pompous. So it's like it's about earlier kind of makes sense. It's like me sniffing the pest bucket that we were talking about earlier. You know, where I was trying to make my own piss. Oh, you don't sniff it, you drink it or whatever I do. That's basically as cool as it is. Which is to say it's not cool whatsoever. Why would you do that? Yeah, I don't know why you do do that. But I don't do that and a multitude of other reasons go for yourself Yani. Go fuck yourself. But with Matthew McConaughey his deck
