In this episode of the Futurized podcast, host Trond Arne Undheim interviews Ken Stanley, CEO & founder of Maven, a new online social network focused on following interests, not people. Stanley is the author of Why Greatness Cannot be Planned (Springer, 2015).

They discuss Stanley's work on open-ended AI algorithms and how they can foster and enhance desirable serendipity. Open-ended systems try to mimic the single run of an algorithm represented by the biological evolution, as well as the evolution of civilization. For now, AI can create useful output based on human prompts or previously collected data. However, if AI truly could be creative at the human level, what then?

Futurized goes beneath the trends to track the underlying forces of disruption in tech, policy, business models, social dynamics and the environment.

I’m your host, Trond Arne Undheim (@trondau), futurist, scholar, author, investor, and serial entrepreneur. I am a Research scholar in Global Systemic Risk, Innovation, and Policy at Stanford University. Join me as I discuss the societal impact of deep tech such as AI, blockchain, IoT, nanotech, quantum, robotics, and synthetic biology, and tackle topics such as entrepreneurship, trends, or the future of work. On the show, I interview smart people with a soul: founders, authors, executives, and other thought leaders, or even the occasional celebrity.

Futurized is a bi-weekly show, preparing YOU to think about how to deal with the next decade's disruption, so you can succeed and thrive no matter what happens.

If you're new to the show, seek particular topics, or you are looking for a great way to tell your friends about the show, which we always appreciate, we've got the episode categories. Kenneth Stanley

CEO & founder

Kenneth is a leading researcher in AI, with 25K+ citations in Google Scholar, 10+ best paper awards, and two paper of the decade awards. He invented several popular AI algorithms, including NEAT, novelty search, HyperNEAT, and CPPNs. Currently, he is using everything he has learned about AI and machine learning throughout his 15+ year tech career to develop Maven, a brand new social network disrupting the traditional online experience by eliminating addictive elements such as likes and followers.
On the network that has caught the attention of top tech leaders, including OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Twitter Co-Founder EV Williams, instead of following people, you follow topics or interests and connect with like-minded individuals, fostering discussions around shared passions rather than popularity contests of likes.
Until recently, Kenneth was the Open-Endedness Team Leader at OpenAI, one of the world's top AI research organizations, and the creator of ChatGPT. Before that, he co-founded AI startup Geometric Intelligence, which was acquired by Uber to create Uber AI Labs, where he headed Core AI research for several years.
