Bunker shots aren't about hitting behind the ball.
Rather, as Josh Zander pointed out, the focus should be on entering the sand behind the ball, as the club should still be descending at this point.
This movement continues to go down and under the ball, aiming for the low point of the swing to be past the ball.
A useful tip shared was to bury a tee under the ball and aim to remove it during the shot, encouraging golfers to go down and under the ball, rather than hitting behind it.
