Unlocking Creativity and Healing: How Emily Tamayo Maher Helped Me Write My Memoir "Dancing in the Rain"

Unlocking Creativity and Healing: How Emily Tamayo Maher Helped Me Write My Memoir

Have you ever felt like life places the perfect people in your path just when you need them most? That’s exactly how I feel about Emily Tamayo Maher, my incredible book coach, who guided me through writing Dancing in the Rain. It wasn’t just about writing a book, though—it was about healing, growing, and learning to love the process (tears and all!).

In my latest podcast episode, I had the honor of chatting with Emily, and let me tell you, this conversation is packed with insights that any aspiring writer or creative soul would find golden. If you’ve ever wanted to explore writing as a spiritual journey, this episode is for you.

How We Met: The Universe’s Perfect Timing
Emily and I crossed paths at a time when I wasn’t even looking for a book coach. I was deep into my own spiritual awakening when I stumbled across her Instagram, and the rest, as they say, is history. I signed up for her free writing staycation (yes, FREE!), which combines yoga and writing, and my heart immediately knew this was the right direction for me. Little did I know it would lead to a powerful partnership that would birth Dancing in the Rain.

Writing with the Chakras: Unlocking Creativity
One of the things that makes Emily so unique is her approach to writing through the chakras. In this podcast episode, she explains how each chakra—starting with the crown and moving all the way down to the root—guides the creative process. It’s about more than just words on a page; it’s about alignment, flow, and connecting with something deeper. From the throat chakra (finding your voice) to the heart chakra (loving your work into existence), Emily shares how this practice can transform not only your writing but also your life. Trust me, I lived it!

The Healing Process: Tears and Breakthroughs
If you’ve followed my journey, you know Dancing in the Rain isn’t just a book—it’s my heart, soul, and healing wrapped in words. Emily and I talk candidly about the emotional process of writing through grief, especially as I navigated the loss of my brother Cory. There were plenty of “goosebumps and tears” moments (as we lovingly call them), but those raw emotions were exactly what needed to be on the page.

For those of you embarking on a healing journey, whether through writing or any other form, know this: vulnerability is strength. The act of opening up, even when it’s hard, is where real growth happens. And believe me, Emily helped me lean into that every step of the way.

Word Counts, Deadlines, and Grace
As a writer, it’s easy to get caught up in word counts and deadlines (oh, the stress of those self-imposed deadlines!). In the podcast, Emily and I laugh about how I kept missing my original goals, and how important it was to show myself some grace. Life happens, and as Emily wisely shares, sometimes we have to stretch our deadlines to let the story unfold naturally. So if you’re out there pushing yourself to hit a deadline—remember to breathe, be kind to yourself, and trust that everything will come together when it’s meant to.

The Power of a Well-Structured Story
One of the standout parts of working with Emily was her ability to help me craft a beautifully structured story. As she says in the episode, writing isn’t just about putting everything on the page—it’s about creating an experience for your readers. The stories in Dancing in the Rain aren’t just my memories; they’re crafted to help the reader connect, reflect, and find healing in their own life.

Emily’s talent lies in pulling out the core message, weaving it through the narrative, and making sure it hits the heart of every reader. And let me tell you, when my editors said this book was “well-structured and easy to read,” I knew it was thanks to Emily’s magic touch.

Celebrating the Journey
As we wrap up the episode, we celebrate not just the completion of my book but the journey that led us here. From the messy first drafts to the goosebump-filled moments of clarity, this process has been a transformative one. I can’t wait for Dancing in the Rain to be out in the world, touching lives, and helping others navigate their own hard, beautiful journeys.
