In this series, I am going to do a quick IDP daft review for each team. We’ll take a look at their IDP draft haul, what it means for their team, and the impact it will have on fantasy managers. We continue the series with the Carolina Panthers who are led by head coach Frank Reich, who led the Panthers to a 7-10 record, 2nd in the NFC South. They have some holes they need to fill and their depth definitely needs an upgrade, but you can’t fix everything all at once. Let’s get started and take a deep dive into their IDP draft haul.
3rd Round 80th overall - DJ Johnson, EDGE, Oregon
The Panthers got a big (6’4”/260 lbs) and explosive (4.49 sec 40-yd & 1.59 sec 10-yd split) defensive end, who hits with power. Opposite of star pass rusher Brian Burns, they don’t really have that bookend pass rusher. The Panthers have some young guys that are filling that role, but no one that DJ Johnson can’t pass on the depth chart. Obviously, there is a long way to go before the start of the season but drafted him fairly early which tells me he’ll get a good look. For fantasy purposes, Johnson is a player you’ll have to be patient with. In true position leagues stash him on your taxi squads and see what happens
5th Round 145th overall - Jammie Robinson, SAF, Florida State
At the safety position, the Panthers have veterans Vonn Bell and Xavier Woods locked in as starters, but behind them, there is very little to be excited about. They selected Jammie Robinson in the 5th round out of Florida State where he recorded 319 tackles and 23 PBUs. He provides the Panthers some versatility by being able to play either safety position. Robinson is an explosive player (1.58 sec 10-yd split), who anticipates plays very well. They love his play in run support efforts but will need to help him polish his overall game. Fantasy managers needing a safety would be wise to grab him in the later rounds and stash for a rainy day.
