The NFL and fantasy football season is officially underway. Fans, coaches, and fantasy managers dance around and are at a fever pitch as they cheer on their teams, with the belief that this is their year. Each week I will bring you the IDP Stock Market to help you understand who you should be investing in and liquidating on your IDP portfolios. So without any further delay let’s get started and away we go!
Investments
Jack Gibbens, LB, Tennessee Titans
This off-season everyone thought that Monty Rice was set to be the Titans starting LB2 next to Azeez Al-Shaair. Fast forward to week one and we quickly got a reality check when he only played on special teams (19 snaps). It was Jack Gibbens, a favorite of HC Mike Vrabel’s that got the start and had a very efficient performance in week one. Gibbens played 42 defensive snaps (65%) and 14 special teams snaps (50%) versus New Orleans and produced a box score of seven total tackles, with five being solos, and one TFL. That added up to a 14.5 fantasy point week for the 2nd year linebacker. Gibbens was started in just 39% of MFL.com leagues, so there is a decent chance that he’s still available on your league's waiver wire. With Rice’s non-existent defensive snap count, I expect Gibbens to continue to start, so go invest in this penny stock for your IDP portfolio.
Drake Jackson, EDGE, San Francisco 49ers
For my next IDP stock market investment, it’s one that I hope you listened to me last year when I suggested that you invest in him as a rookie. Jackson was drafted last year to be the bookend to superstar Nick Bosa and will be involved in a heavy rotation this season. He played 28 defensive snaps in week one versus the Pittsburgh Steelers and after his huge performance, that number will surely go up and even see him get starts. Jackson recorded three tackles, all being solos, TFLs, and sacks. He also added six pressures on the day. With that breakout performance, this could be your last opportunity to invest in his stock at a reasonable cost.
Victor Dimukeje, EDGE, Arizona Cardinals
If you’re looking for a super cheap penny stock to invest in, then boy do I have just the player for you. The long-term value for Victor Dimukeje an EDGE for the Arizona Cardinals is a tough one to predict right now, but the opportunities for his shares to skyrocket are there. They lost JJ Watt to retirement, Zack Allen to free agency, and were set to roll with a pair of 2nd-year options in Cameron Thomas and Myjai Sanders who they love, but unfortunately, Sanders suffered an injury (hand) and is on the IR. The next man up is Dimukeje, who had a solid week one versus the Washington Commanders. While he got the start for the Cardinals, he played just 25 defensive snaps (35%) but was efficient. On the afternoon he recorded three total tackles, two were solos, with one TFL, one sack, and one forced fumble. His snap count might not have been the most desirable, but his output will for sure get him more looks going forward. For now, Dimukeje is a week-to-week stock but there are some very nice opportunities to capitalize on. One such opportunity is this week versus the New York Giants who were absolutely horrible in week one versus Dallas. A waiver wire boom stock that many will overlook. Don’t make that same mistake!
Liquidations
Monty Rice, LB, Tennessee Titans
When the Tennessee Titans let LB David Long leave in free agency and brought in Azeez Al-Shaair, many wondered who would play next to Al-Shaair. All off-season many thought that it would be Monty Rice who would be the Titans LB2, but after week one that proved not to be the case. He only played 19 special teams snaps and that was it. He wasn’t injured, so the fact that he didn’t play one single defensive snap is concerning and Jack Gibbens (above) was the starter tells me all that I need to know. I wasn’t high on Rice to begin with and this confirms to me he’s a stock that should be liquidated from your IDP portfolio.
Leonard Williams, DE, New York Giants
Dating back to week nine of the 2021 season, Leonard Williams has recorded just 3½ sacks in 24 games played (including playoffs), and five inactives. As you can see he’s a brand name stock that has been trending down for some time now. When healthy he’ll give you some decent tackle numbers for the position but without the pass rush numbers, he’s not a player I can trust on a weekly basis. His name still carries some value so I suggest trying to flip him to an owner who likes him and has a need at defensive end. You’re not gonna get a ton for him, but it’s time to liquidate this stock from your IDP portfolios.
