In Part 1 of a two-part interview, Rachel speaks to Cathryn, a young idealist who was recruited into the Unification Church, also known as "The Moonies". She speaks with her mother Cynthia, who fought valiantly to get her daughter out of the group. Cynthia, a musician, garnered help from her friends, therapists, law enforcement officials, cult experts, and the media in order to rescue her daughter. Cynthia lives in New Zealand but was in New York visiting her mother when they spoke with Rachel.
Stay tuned, Before You Go: Rachel talks about how a need to belong can cause people to make sense of things that might not quite make sense-- and that needing to memorize teachings that aren't based in logic can cause people to abandon their critical thinking. This is especially true when not "getting it" makes one feel ostracized and pushed away from their new community.
