The Submission Proposal

Description

The podcast aims in part to honor and document the subculture of Madonna remixing that exists internationally. This is accomplished in part with interviews with remixers & producers that have Madonna as a muse. Content includes behind the remix interviews, DJ continuous mixes, exclusive premiers, & beat synced visualizers. Produced, mixed, and hosted by Kerry John Poynter.

It launched in early 2023 and debuted at #19 on the U.S. iTunes Music Commentary Chart, has top 100 rankings on every continent in more than 35 countries. It’s beginnings trace back to 2022 when my original 16 year old CKNYC podcast spawned a test run of 14 episodes for the online conglomerate Madonna Remixers United. A new feed. Listeners rave about the podcast's high-quality production and compelling storytelling, citing the "iconic" Dubtronic episode, the In Remembrance episode to trailblazer remixer Idaho who passed recently, and the emotionally resonant Cleo Nasser episode (few Women in the industry, overcoming personal tragedies) as highlights. The Mashed Potatoes mashups series and the Heartbreak Beats episode, are praised for their masterful remixes and creative tributes. Many reviewers also express their enjoyment of the accompanying video visualizers, enhancing the overall listening experience.

Why did you start your podcast?

The international community of remix artists - many often produced underground unofficial remixes from the artists vast songbook. Madonna historically enjoys a well earned respect from the dance music community and DJ's. She has 50 #1 Billboard dance chart songs in a row and that is not a mistake. The vocal tracks and stems were freely available thanks to Madonna and her record company. I befriended many of these talented producers to gain access to higher quality files of their remixes for my CKNYC 16 year old podcast. In 2022 I began a partnership with the international online conglomerate Madonna Remixers United - I offered my podcast listener base and feed for their use to produce a podcast series. I hosted and produced 14 episodes of The Official Podcast of Madonna Remixes United in 2022. These episodes and my own CKNYC Madonna episodes were spun off into a new feed named Like A Muse in 2023. The podcast gives space and attention to a little known subculture that thrives to this day, 45 years into The Queen's career. No other musical artist has such a vibrant and similarly organized community. The featured Like A Muse episodes expose the lives, remix community, diverse international voices, as well as the challenges and obstacles these musicians and producers face. Madonna often is brunt of ageism and naturally appeals to an older demographic of 35-65, the average age of my listeners. The vast majority of these remix artists are underground and produce non-commissioned remix works that are part of the tapestry of respect that Madonna enjoys from the electronic/dance musical genre.

How Does Your Podcast Help Make the world a better place?

  • Creates valuable space for unknown or underground remixers or music producers to reach a larger audience.
  • Allows for remixers from international cultures and communities to explain, in “behind the remix” interviews, how lived experience has shaped their sound productions. Often topics of misogyny, ageism, homophobia, inspiration, audio production, and stories of success are part of the episodes, in addition to listening to their remix productions.
  • Provides individual remixers/producers a voice to educate about concepts and lived experiences that are genuine and sometimes emotionally personal.
  • Connects disparate remixers/producers from all corners and cultures of the our geographic world allowing for support and even further skills development.
