Dee Rock was raised on the West Coast by parents who enjoyed good music and had deep roots in Texas. His dad especially enjoyed good music and introduced Dee to a variety of music genres including Motown, Country, Blues, and Jazz. As a result of those influences and those deep Texas roots, Dee has a unique style that he has come to define as, “my Mojo Gumbo style”.
Dee’s very first concert, The Jackson Five with Buddy Miles opening, had a profound impact on Dee, and it was while listening to Buddy Miles, who had played with music legends like Jimi Hendrix and The Band of Gypsies, that he decided he had to become a musician. After the concert, he went home and got “serious about playing the guitar”.
As a young man hanging out on the Virgin lot with stars like Lenny Kravitz and Paula Abdul, Dee was introduced to the big wigs at Virgin Records and was soon offered a job producing an album for ‘The College Boyz’, one of the first rap groups signed to Virgin Records. Dee then went on to produce other albums for a variety of artists with Virgin and EMI.
But Dee wasn’t just producing…he was writing his own music for other artists as well. He has written songs for films and contributed songs on the soundtrack for the Warner
